Just Finished a Full Painless Wiring job on a '75 CJ5.

Hello everyone. I have Just completed a Full Painless Wiring Harness installation on my '75 CJ5.

It took 2 months, and the truck just started last Friday, January the

13, 2006. But everything works perfect. I took my time and did everything to almost prefection. I am very Anal.

The Painless Tech guys in Fort Worth, Texas were just great. They were always there when I phoned and knew the correct answer to my questions right away. And they were ALWAYS right.

If any of you guys have any questions about doing a Wiring Harness on an old Jeep, right now I would love to help anyone, before I forget how to do it

Todd.

Congratulations! It sounds like your Painless experience was, well, more painless than mine. When I did my `79 CJ-5 I found the Painless documentation to be something of a mess, on occasion they didn't pick up their phone during business hours and at least one of their techs was rather testy -- from the time he picked up the phone.

Hi Lee, you are correct that the Instructions are a little hard to follow at times, but overall, I'd have to say they were pretty good. I did use the Universal Harness and the error bypasssing the Maxi-Fuse, System Fuse, or Fusable Link, (whatever you want to call it), is still in there. But, the Manual now has a supplement to it that tells you how to hook up the 50 Amp Maxi-Fuse. It is very clear on this point.

But if you had this Maxi-Fuse in the kit, and the instructions didn't show you how or where the Fuse went, wouldn't you call Painless and find out why? I mean, anything that I thought was not documented, and any wires that I had no idea about what they were for, I just called Painless and they told me what the wires were.

But don't get me wrong here, I had to do a lot of thinking before I did any kind of work. And this continued throughout the whole installation. I also had an original Jeep Technical Service Manual that I got from eBay for about $60.00. This Manual was great and had a full Wiring Schematic for my truck.

The one thing that I did do was to think through as best I could what was going on and try to have the pages of the manual all ready before I called Painless. I found that if you had a specific question and already knew almost what was going on, the Painless tech guys would answer you right away. And they were always nice to me, and the phone was always answered in about minute or 2.

Here's an example:

I was putting in a 3rd party Turn Signal Switch that was not Original Jeep equipment. So I had to look at the Painless Manual and document the wiring that was going into the Turn Signal Switch connector of the Harness, because that was where I had to hook up my Turn Signal Switch wires to. So, I had all the wires of the harness connector figured out, except one. Now this was an Orange wire and it was not documented in the Turn Signal section of the Manual. So I called Painless and asked them what was the Orange wire for? The tech guy said that he didn't know right off hand, so he went to look. He comes back to the phone 2 mins later and tells me that it's if you have an Automatic transmission on the steering column, this Orange wire is used to power the light on the shifter selector on top.

Well, that was all I needed to know, I didn't need to hook up that wire, as my truck is a 3 speed manual on the floor. I went through a lot of this type of thing. But it didn't bother me as long as I knew what all the wires were for.

I have never done any kind of Automotive wiring before, or have any experience in wiring or electricity before I attempted this project. I learned a lot about the topic installing the Painless system. It just seemed to me that as I was going through the installation that Painless had thought of everything. I was not missing anything that I needed and still have a quite a few things in the Harness that I could add onto my Jeep later. Like a Tach, and more interior lighting.
