Low milage oil changes?

My '95 YJ is not a daily driver. I usually take it out for a drive every weekend and off road about once a month. It gets driven about

1000 miles per year, at least half of that off-road. This means the oil would get changed every three years according to the schedule. Is this OK or should it be done once a year regardless of the milage?

Thanks

I believe you need to read the schedule a little closer. It states every X number of miles 'or' every X number of months.

I do mine once a year anyway if I have no miles on it and at 3K miles or sooner depending on how 'hard' those miles were.

Thanks for the replies. Once a year sounds like a good way to do it.

You do an oil change, don't drive it, then in 12 months change the oil again? I'll change at 3500 with dino, or 5000 with M1. If the vehicle has not been used much (ie. 1000-1500 miles) I'll change it at 6 months. If it has NEVER been started, I'll change it every millenium just for fun and practice and to keep the rust on the oil pan down.

In addition to the other replies, you want to take the climate where you live into consideration. If the vehicle is driven off road in the mountains and then stored in the desert well there isn't much chance for water vapor to get into the sump. If the off road is mudding in the rain, and then the vehicle is stored in a coastal area like Puget Sound, a frightful combination of toxic waste can build up over the winter.

I would change the oil once a year, right after the last off road run, while the engine is still hot. That way you will drain the maximum amount of poisons each time.

Mountains and desert is the terrain around here and pretty dry most of the year. Thanks for the advice.

5,000 miles is about right, however, a common misconception is that synthetic oil can go longer between changes, it can't.

Most oil contamination is from external sources so synthetic oil will contaminate just the same as dino oil and should be changed as often.

With the price of products such as Mobil 1 getting almost to the "reasonable" range there's no reason not to change synthetic as often and plenty of reason to change it.

Well, 'no' miles more meant less than a 1000....

I have seen many a trip finish with us all needing most fluids changed or at least checked really carefully...
