New '00 Cherokee Sport Owner - couple of questions..

Hi

Just got an '00 Cherokee sport on Friday. 48k miles, nice shape, really neat.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. The front and rear differential housings; what's the best way to change that fluid? Crack them open or suck it out with a siphon or such? On the back it doesn't look like the rear differential cover has a filler bolt hole, but a rubber plug, normal?

  1. The 4wd part, it says 4hi, 4lo and 2w... When the 4w is engaged, the dash light reads 'part-time'. Does that mean all 4 wheels are actually driving, or is it only when the vehicle senses the back losing traction?

I need to get the front and rear diff's done , plus the transfer case and auto transmission, does anyone recommend a certain brand of trans filter kit?

Thanks and looking forward to the NG.

At some point, someone decided to call the more hardcore slippery condition 4 wheel drive mode "part time". There may be some logic in this, that you would only use this mode "part of the time" when you are not on dry pavement, dry dirt, etc. Don't use part time 4 wheel drive any time that you don't need the additional traction, just use the 2 wheel mode.

In addition to the good stuff you'll get here on the group, you will probably want to invest in a genuine factory service manual, available off the

in the "for owners" section. A tad expensive, not as bad as some brands, but worth the money--unlike the generics you'll find at a local part store. While you are at

run thru the section on types of 4 wheel drives.

thanks for the link, found out from that site that I have a safety recall for a debris shield fix for that vehicle!
