OT. anyone know of good info on explorers?

That's the blue oval (ford) explorers.. My xj is just about dead...the leaky gas tank, bad wheel bearing, rusted rockers, broken leaf, bent front end (from a deer incident 6 yrs ago), leaky roof (yes its from the roof, lots of fiberglass patches) and many other little things.. its due for retirement..

Any I was/am looking at a 1994 explorer, and was just wondering if anyone happens to know of some good sites to read up on them.. google spews forth a million but some closet ford fanatic here may be able to shorten the list..... (Bill ???)

The early ones, (along the era you're looking at) went through a lot of front brake pads and rotors.

The earlier Explorers have a track history of rolling over and exploding.

that mainly happened due to ford recommending a lower tire pressure (to

28psi IIRC) to give a smoother ride and less body roll during cornering, if some ran those tires at a more realistic pressure of 32-35 psi then no tire blow outs and a reduced amount of rollovers.... any vehicle with a high C of G will have tendency to roll over... even a jeep..

If that was the determining factor then is it correct to extrapolate that "idiots that do not understand high CG vehicles' are the ones that purchase Ford Explorers?

It will also have come from the factory with an ignition switch that Ford knew was defective and a distributor mounted ignition module known to fail intermittently due to normal underhood temperatures.

This particular model came equipped with the A4LD tranny which is a document POS. Go to the alt.rec.autos.explorer and see for yourself. It is a french tranny based on the C3 POS. Jim

On usenet you generally hear only the bad anecdotes. How about this in contrast: One of my kids is still driving my wife's '91 Explorer with ~140K miles on it without engine or tranny work, the other kid is driving my mother's '93 (only 40K, mom preferred the land yacht in her last 5 years, didn't drive it). The '93 has needed new front rotors. Both suffered from poor muffler design leading to multiple muffler replacements. In the meantime I've gone throuth a '91 explorer with manual tranny needing warranty work at 40K, handed on to kid at 70K and eventually dumped at >90K, a '97 wrangler dumped at 70K when it needed front end work, and 3 years of a Liberty. The problem with Explorers is the same as with any other make; the longer they're on the market the more upscale they get, and adding gizmos just adds a potential for unreliability. (I'd really like my '81 wagoneer with a stick back - now where did I leave that allen wrench for the door handle?) Try .

I custom ordered a brand new 2 door sport in 94.

5 speed, 4wd. It was comfortable but there were things that made me get rid of it fast.

The brakes were scary. If traveling a long distance and then braking say at a stop sign or going downhill coming home from Tahoe, it would jerk hard right. Frightening when on the side facing a 600ft ravine. Dealership never found the problem. The transmission was not great either. The synchros were out of whack from early on in the game. Sometimes you couldn't get it into gear to save your life.other times it would pop out as if someone had hit the shifter. Again, could not duplicate at the service department.

You might want have a good mechanic give it the once over and take it for a nice long test drive before you buy it. Try the brakes, get up to 45-50 mph and slam em - like an emergency stop and see how it responds.

I'll bet that for the same money you could find a good used Cherokee, a much better vehicle.

My experience with this vehicle was what made me go for the Liberty when looking for something similar this time.
