OT - Chevy Camaro Iroc Z '85

Anyone know what specifically to look out for on these ? Its selling for ~5K USD and has the 305ci carb'd (holley) engine not the 305 tpi. I'm tempted... I gather they have weak gearboxes - this one has a rebuilt one.

hi dave, i owned an '85 while in high school (bought it used in 85). a comparable car around here goes for about $3,000 US and thats if its in great shape. all in all its an "ok" car, but if i were buying one i think id keep looking for one with the tpi. the tpi is a great system and easily upgraded as your horsepower needs grow. if you can, hold out until you find an 87-89 model with the tpi and 350. the 305 is a dog and theres not much you can do to help it. valve clearance is an issue with the gm 305 so you can forget any _real_ head or even cam upgrades. something else to keep in mind, the mid 80's 305 used lifters that were to hard/soft (dont remember now) and they eat camshafts prematurely.

something else worth mentioning, the 85 iroc came in three flavors. the carb'd version only made 155hp.

This is a white trash trailer park car. Look for a Monte Carlo SS like I used to have. ;o)

Dave,

Unless the price of US cars is greatly inflated over there in all cases, this price is way too high for the car. Especially for the carbureted 305 model. I'm sure this may be the case because of the cost of shipping a car over there. Anyway, for Midwestern US, that car retails for a maximum of $3175 according to NADA bluebook. Their high retail value is based on a car that is basically perfect for its age and could be put on a car lot to sell. In reality, they sell for much less. For instance, I looked at an 89 Trans Am with the 350 TPI setup, but an automatic trans, and it was selling for $2500. The car was in very good condition. The interior was a bit dirty, but the body and paint were great. It was probably redone if the car spent its whole life in our area. Rust shows up on a car about as quick as dirt on a Jeep here.

Do you class the IROC in the same league as the '71 Charger R/T, a 440 Olds or a 440 Plymouth Barracuda all of which could do the standing quarter at over 100mph ?

American muscle cars died effective with the great emasculation in the 1971 models. The last good Camaro was the 370 hp solid liftered 350 in the 1970 Z-28. The denutting to allow the use of regular gas that was mandated in the next year pretty much killed the american auto industry and IMNHO it hasn't completely recovered.

Guess you haven't mashed the gas on an LS-1 powered Z28 have you! Most dyno around 300 RWHP.

No, because the '85 that you are looking at is probably capable of the same

24 mpg as the '87 Monte Carlo that I owned. Even though the mid-eighties "muscle cars" were not the same as the early seventies versions with their 400 inch plus power plants, they were lighter and still retained enough horse power to weight ration to make driving to work fun. They were also heavy enough and retained enough low engine speed torque to out class your pasta burner any day.

I appreciate that going round corners is not a pony car requirement, so lets just say it goes ( 0-62 in 7 sec) in a straight line ; slow enough to get cuffed by real muscle car, but faster than the 85 IROC.

It's not about street drag racing. It's about class, style, and élan. The Monte Carlo that I showed you has all of these. Even the Camaro has a little. I am afraid that your Alfa... Well let's just say that it is not even what Alfas used to be. This is I suppose why you will never understand Harleys.

Don't give up on me - I'll develop some when I get old and get a Harley to fart around town tastefully with, impressing the youth with my élan and panache.

Dave, I think you should start with dance lessons. From there you can graduate to listening to Blues music and hanging out in smoke filled bars, dancing West Coast Swing. If Latin is more your style, then try Salsa. If you do these things you will eventually realize the inadequacy of the Milano to express true style, and the right vehicle will become obvious. You own a Wrangler; you are not hopeless.

my current ride traps over 100 ;) definitely not a muscle car tho.

i think IROC's are like muscle car 101... theyre the training wheels for the obsession that is sure to develop (i spent too many years and money on a failed GTO Judge project (failed because i ran out of money haha)

I'm not important enough yet to tint the windows. But, if I learn to dance as well as you, perhaps I'll get into some A list panties, I mean parties :-)
