Running a computer store i wouls say, Ad-Aware by lavasoft is the most complete one at the moment, Just do a full scan and not the smart scan if you are very infected.

Spysweeper by Webrot is also very good.

I agree with Roy. The important thing is that they look for different stuff. I run Adaware and spybot both and they do come up with different things. I think I will go try out that Blaster, thanks for that lead. Tomes

We do PC tune ups at my store. We did 387 so far this year. The best program to stop Spyware/Adware is McAfee's Anti-spyware. Cost is $29.99, available everywhere. Often you'll find an office supply store that has a $30 rebate on it, which makes it FREE.

AdAware and Spybot are good, but they are freeware and don't have the updates that a pay program has. Just read their user agreements: "This is dedicated to my girlfriend, the reason I wrote this program is to protect her."

McAfee's also protects against Keyloggers, Anti-dialers, and other security threats.

updates for Spybot and Adaware seem pretty regular to me. If a mechanic works on his girlfriend's Jeep, does that mean he does a bad job ?

I had Ad Aware for awhile but it didnt't seem to update very often. The PC World recommeded "Spy Assassin", which was like $20usd, which recently morphed into something called Adware Filter. Seems to catch virtually all popups that XP SP2 misses.

Don't get me wrong, they are fine products and the price is right. In fact some computers we use those programs to fix issues, because we can run them from CD. My point is that the people who do the updates for those programs have other 9-5 jobs. I'm just putting my 2 cents in. We do a ton of PC tune-ups at work, and we have found McAfee's to be the best Adware/Spyware preventer and remover so far.

We have also found that Spybot and Adaware do not have the safest removal techniques. The most known is New.Net. If removed with Spybot or Adaware, you will damage your winsock. With a damaged winsock, you can no longer access the internet, you will get a PAGE NOT FOUND error.

You can often find McAfee's AntiSpyware on sale for FREE after rebate, with makes that price right also.

Adware Filter is more of a pop-up blocker and spy preventer, than a adware/spyware remover. AdAware 6 does not get the updates that AdAware SE does. AdAware SE does a much better job of cleaning the registry for those using WinXP, especially those who use multiple log on names.

also get BHOdemon.

i found that many of the spyware programs tend to miss those search bar take-overs. bhodemon is specifically for them

By that logic, I would presume that Microsoft crap is better than Linux?

And Adaware SE is free - this is the version I use. It updates weekly or so by my reckoning. Tomes

that was the point I was making to Mark - a mechanic will do a better than average job on his g/f's Jeep, and Linux is better than MS crap as you so eloquently put it.
