OT: Setting up a Jeep forum

The problem is the old days are gone for Usenet, now it's just a place for spam, flame wars, and other unsavory stuff. When I started lurking here there were no forums, now there are a million of them, and I suspect the other Jeep forums are where most of the old timers are. Forums have advantages that Usenet can't even dream of, like posting pictures, splitting threads, moderation, etc. Really Usenet is from the days when a 14.4k modem was considered fast.

If I thought for a second it would be worth my time to setup a forum to provide a place where this group of people could be a real group again, I'd do it. I've setup and currently moderate several forums so for me it's really no big deal to do another. I'd even agree to pay to have it hosted on a reliable server. (if it would be ok to put discrete advertising on the forum to pay for that hosting.) If advertising would be a no-no then maybe a PayPal link to cover costs, or heck it could be like public radio with an annual fund drive to keep it on the air. I know of a forum where the founding group created a governing council to make sure the forum was run in a manner acceptable to all and to ensure the forum would keep going as members of the founding group came and went.

If we could attract back some of the guys from the old days it could be one of those places that was cool to hang out in again. I know I enjoy some of the other forums I lurk in, but none have that feeling of camaraderie that this one used to have.

Anyway it is just an idea, don't know if it will gain any traction, but I thought I'd throw the idea out there.

Dean and Mike I remember those shirts and hats, I never got one, dang. (well I did try to sell some but that's another story )

Hey Dean,

I'm a relatively new member of the group but not to Usenet. I have been on it since - wow - since before I upgraded to a 14.4 modem. That should tell you how long. I remember logging on to a black screen that scrolled wildly and scared me half to death when I first saw the lists of groups. I remember the first friend I made on Usenet. He was from Ireland and lived there then. I was amazed at the idea that I could "talk" to someone from there.

He was lurking in a group that was a Windows support group and helped me enormously. He helped me to understand my computer and the internet and then we became buddies. I gave him a quirky nickname, it was noticed by a cute little gal in AZ. They fell in love online, and he eventually immigrated to the USA. They were married a year or so later, have two beautiful daughters and though we don't hear from them much, I always think of those days when I'm here. I think that some of the folks here that are kind of like me. They like the old down to earth approach and comradery of Usenet.

Unlike most of today's folks, I don't care for the new online forums. I like Usenet, and will likely stick right here. The crown there tends to be much younger than I am I guess, that may be part of it.

I've joined a few other groups in the past, Mustang stuff (before I traded my Cobra in for my jeep) and even looked at some of the Jeep groups. Each time I just walk away shaking my head and go back to the old trail I am familiar with.

Another thing about the online groups is that I don't like the layout of them and to me personally, it's an inconvenience. I like opening OE and seeing my email and the groups I have subscribed to all in one neat little package.

Kinda like my Jeep.. Usenet is old fashioned, misunderstood to many, abused by some and as a general rule considered a quirky vehicle to get where I want to go BUT It has all I need and all I want - and it suits me perfectly.
