Posting this Newsgroup's (RAMJ+W) CHARTER.

I intended to post this earlier but mistakenly picked out subjects to object to so started something I wasn't intending. Sorry. Just in one of those moods...

This *REC* group, rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys or RAMJ+W has a formal Charter that lots of ISP's and commercial entities will respect.

It needs to be posted periodically to keep it valid.

The whole process including the votes can be viewed here:

ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/news.announce.newgroups/rec/rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys

Here is the Charter text quoted:

RATIONALE: rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys

The discussion of Jeep 4 wheel drive vehicles began on the offroad mailing list as well as on the Usenet group rec.autos.4x4. As the offroad mailing list grew in size, the Jeep-L listserver was set up to discuss topics specifically to Jeep and Willys vehicles.

At this time there are more that 50 articles sent to the Jeep listserver, as well as > 50 articles being sent on the offroad server daily. The volume on the usenet group rec.autos.4x4 exceeds 125 articles daily.

It has been suggested that a new Usenet group be created to take the load off of the listservers as well as limit the articles in the rec.autos.4x4 newsgroup.

CHARTER: rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys

The unmoderated newsgroup rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys is to be used for discussions, announcements, expression of opinions, and questions about Jeep (Trade Mark) and Willys vehicles. It also serves as a medium for those interested in sharing and exchanging their experience. It is also meant to be a forum for buying and selling parts by non-commercial vendors.

Some things that could be discussed....

-Jeep/Willys history -repairs and modifications -parts exchange -technical information -4x4 driving experiences -vehicle restoration -new vehicle evaluations

Some things that shouldn't be discussed....

-4 wheel drive vehicles made by other manufacturers -commercial posts

The articles sent to the Jeep listserver will be cross-posted to Usenet but not vise versa.

END CHARTER.

End quote.

However, no one cares.

If you wish to have a pristine and orderly NG it can be done in one, only one, way. It must be moderated. There is no other way that anyone will respect in the long or short run.

Exactly, and Mike does attempt to moderate it with a fairly light touch.

Seeing how the success of this newsgroup is dependant on US the users and the main contributors (and lurkers), I for one don't mind be reminded from time to time that there is a charter and a "code of conduct" that we should attempt to follow. Just look at other groups that don't have a charter and see the chaos that goes on there.

A moderated newsgroup is one in which an actual gatekeeper or moderator physically approves of each post. That is not the case here.

I think you said that very well.

In many ways the group is self moderated. I have seen several members at one time or another remind others what the guidelines are. Particularly in the case of trolls or commercial posters.

This is really a VERY good group. The gentle reminders now and then help keep it from getting completely askew but the relaxed atmosphere makes it an enjoyable place to hang out.

Every newsgroup has a charter. Sooner or later, almost every newsgroup becomes a target for spammers, cross posters, off topic discussion, etc. and the good members eventually give up and leave. It's a great pity but.... that's how it works, a charter is no protection as it can be completely ignored.

Only moderated newsgroups can survive the above but they don't survive, either. Sooner or later the moderation becomes too strict and the long time members are driven away.

Anyone who's been on usenet for many years knows exactly how it works and, again, I wish it weren't so but every group seems to follow the pattern.

Isn't that what 'alt' groups are all about? No Charter so anarchy rules? That is the difference in the 'rec' or 'sci' groups with a Charter.

no, as i understand it a charter is necessary to form any usenet group regardless of its hierarchy.

What happened to your alt.hvac charter then? As you stated yesterday, in an alt.hvac posting

i dont know, which is why i asked for help in finding it.

thats just to carry it on their own servers. getting all the other usenet servers in the world to host it requires a charter that must be posted for discussion.
