rough idle 97 TJ

Ok so this morning i was tracking down an overheating problem with my jeep in idle. Turns out the problem was a clogged radiator. Anyways so I ran the jeep about 30 minutes in idle to assure myself that it wasn't overheating any more. At that point it was running fine. About

1/2 hour later, I started my Jeep again and it ran really really rough. It didnt stall, but the RPMs were going up and down in idle. It was acting really weird. I went to the parts store and bout Seafoam, and filled up my gas tank, but the problem still persisits.

i just got a check engine light and code:

24* Throttle position sensor over 4.96V

I tried cleaning the contacts on it to no avail. Now should I clean out the throttle body or replace the sensor?

Probably need a TPS. Mine went bad and it wouldn't idle.

is there a way to test the old one?

They are a basic rheostat. You can put a multimeter on them and move the throttle expecting to see a smooth rise in resistance as you do it. Mine rises by 1 ohm increments all the way up.

The other way on the older ones at least was to back probe the plug in and read the voltage with the engine off, AC off and key in the run position. It should start at .02V and rise to 4.8V.

which terminals do i test? there are 3 of them

The center and either of the others. I think they mirror each other for use in an automatic so one will read .02V and the other will read 4.8V to the center.

One will read that way anyway and the meter won't hurt anything checking the other.
