Trail Diesel

Well, I finally went on a trail run with a diesel today, and I've got to say that it was an overwhelming experience. My opinion now is that it is definitely worse to be behind a diesel on the trail than a carbureted gasoline-powered rig. I couldn't believe the billowing clouds of pitch-black smoke that spewed from this diesel FJ40 that was with us. My subjective opinion that unburned gas is a worse smell the diesel exhaust remains, but with the sheer volume of exhaust that diesel put out it doesn't matter. Wow. The owner said it was a normally aspirated 3.4 litre, and that it won't "smoke" so much when he puts a turbo on it. I sure hope he's right, because it's a beautiful and capable rig, but it sure is odouriferous!

I didn't know there were any NA diesels in vehicle service anymore. What engine did he have in his?

Even NA diesels shouldn't smoke that bad except when cold. Has he had his pump checked? If it's within spec and hasn't been 'turned up' maybe he should use Power Service or add some K-1 if he's burning #2.

We are in Canada so it is cold already and he is burning the cold fuel.

Those things are just plain obnoxious on the trails when called on to make some torque. Even idling along they are bad but when you have to pour it on, well.... They should bring up the rear.....

Depends where you are.. It's been sitting around 15C-17C during the day for the past week or so here.. getting down to -2to-4C during the night.. Even now at 7:14pm it's 10C outside right now.. And that's just a few minutes north of Calgary...

Well he did say he swapped it into his FJ40, but I believe it was an engine that could be had in such trucks from the factory. This was a Canadian truck if that matters.
