A potential Sedona buyer would like some info

I've been reading some of the posts re the Sedona van. I currently have a Plymouth Voyager purchased new in 1994, now with 161,000+ miles on it, and it's time to start thinking of a replacement. I went to a Sedona dealer here in SE Pennsylvania and got a preliminary price of around $18K, which is around 3 or 4K less than a comparably equipment Caravan, it really sounded too good to be true.......... and we all know what that means. Any way, from what I've read on the Web, the quality report on Kia seems to be, at best, mixed. JD Power rates them at 2 out of 5, but feedback from owners on different sites (Edmunds and such) rates the Sedona at around 8.5 to 9.0, out of 10; seems odd, such a wide variance in ratings.

So.......... what's the dirt on the Sedona? Is it a dog? A winner? A used-to-be dog that is now becoming a winner? Or is the quality so uneven that it just depends on the particular vehicle you buy? If I buy one, I'm going to ride it hard and long, so I don't want to get stuck with something that's going to roll over and die at 100K miles.

Thanks for any insight on the Sedona. Marty

I've not seen any major issues with the Sedona. I have no problem saying that I'd expect it to be more reliable than any Caravan. And I think it rides and handles better than any Caravan I've driven, but I haven't driven a new 2005 yet. Really, if this van has enough space for you, it's probably the buy to make. The only consistent complaint I've heard about this vehicle is that it gets poor gas mileage.

Personally, I love mine. Had it for about 1 year so far, and I've had no major problems. The problem with trying to gauge vehicle quality is that you really can't tell for at least a few years. My guess is that truely knows their quality better than anyone, and if they think that they can sell a Sedona for $18k and provide a good of a warranty as they do, they must think that their warranty expenses will be pretty low. All I know is that each time I drive mine I'm even happier than before. Smooth (best transmission I've ever owned), looks good, etc. I recommend it.

If you have any other questions, just let me know.

Ditto to Jamie,

we have a 2003 EX with only 12k miles on it now, but it is very peppy, nice trans, nice package, rides great! Mileage does suck, but only by a couple miles less than the others. We drove the Dodge Grand Caravan, sport, the Ford POS Windstar, and we didn't have to think twice about the Sedona.

Granted 12,000 miles isn't enough to get a true indicator, but it's a good start. My only complaint is that the steering is a bit sensitive on the expressway, one little turn of the wheel and it moves, but that is based on driving my F150 PU and current Dodge 1500 Ram Van, which is full size.

Drive them all, then make up your own mind! They are going to be building the 2005's in a new KIA plant in southern US so parts should no longer be a concern, not that I have had any problems getting regular maintenance parts!

We've had ours for 2 years, and only problem was an annoyance that the dealer didn't want to deal with, but think you'd find this behavior no matter what brand, depends on the management, personality, etc. With the help of Hyundaitech and getting quite firm, it was fixed, and we couldn't be happier with ours, other than mileage, but we knew that going in. Well, you're gonna generally get the "i love it" or "i hate it" posts here and in other places. I check up from time to time to see what's new.

As for my van, it is very much fine. 34,000 miles and no issues. My only complaint is the size - way too little legroom.

I've had mine for a year now and its been a great car. We just took it for Ky to Fla for vacation and it was great. Nice ride and with the 5 speed transmission the car loves to cruise at 80 mph. Had 2 problems with the car that were quickly fixed by the dealer. Noisy window regulator and a loose evap hose on the gas tank that caused the check engine light to come on. I'm actually thinking buying a Sorento now before Kia stops giving the loyalty rebates.
