Alert to Sedona Owners -- Acceleration Issue

This topic has come up several time recently at kia-forums.com.

While attempting to accelerate, the engine may drop back down to idle speed for up to twenty seconds. This has been reported on both diesel and gasoline models and both on automatic and manual models. The problem, so far, corrects itself. But, while it's happening, dangerous situations can occur.

Just a heads up to my fellow Sedona owners.

Funny; we blew a mass air flow sensor this past weekend when I tried to pass a semi.

Luckily we were able to get it off the road without mishap.

Friggin computers. Damned things attempt to run everything and f*ck it up royally more often than not.

Glad you came out of that with no problem.

Computers are just way too complex not to be buggy. And, if we were ever to work out all of the problems, we would just add new functionality that would, inevitably, screw up.

Very interesting, thanks for the link, CMM.

I haven't noticed this at all (60K miles on my '02) but imagine that it could happen due to various issues.

My only response would be to possibly downshift to force the accelleration. The OP might also have the ECM read just to see if there's any codes being thrown which aren't enough to cause the Check Engine light to come one.

Wierd. As one who does mostly freeway (80+) driving in the car, I haven't seen this but would be leery of needing to pass. Maybe because he's in England - and they drive backwards there - the engine didn't know what to do. :P

Those backward, diesel engines over there are a lot different than ours. I guess, even though the problem exhibits itself in the same way, the cause may be totally different.

Unfortunately, though, it's happened to some US drivers, too, including me. I was starting up from a stop light. Let off the brake and pressed the accelerator and it just crawled across the intersection. I had some cars behind me so I pulled off to the side and let them pass. Tried again. No problem. Made a turn about a mile up the road, went to speed up again and same thing. It happened to my wife once before that and once after but the problem hasn't recurred in several weeks.
