Sportage spring question...

Hi all, I have a '98 Sportage. While working on the rear brakes, I noticed that the coil spring on the rear passanger side was hanging partway off the circular seat that it normally sits on, i.e. it was not "centered" on the disk that is welded to the rear end. Looking at the other one, there appears to be a rubber pad type thing that holds the spring on the seat. This is missing on the passanger side spring. When I jacked up the body on that side, the rear end dropped enough for the spring to come loose. not quite enough to pull it out, but very close.

What is going on here? Is there anything that limits the downward movement of the rear end other than the shock absorber? Is this just a bad shock? it does not exibit any of the classic "bad shock" (bouncy ride, etc) symptoms. The spring sits at the same compressed length as the "good" side, and the truck sits level. Also, anyone know what that rubber pad thing is called so that I can order another?

Any ideas/advice/info?

Thanks very muck for any help.
