2.5 Petrol Engine missing parts

Help - I have had long term problems with the engine on my 1989, 2.5 petrol

110 Landrover it has done 60K miles and has an intermittant problem where it looses power coughs and splutters. If you stop and wait 10 min all is well. Some times it will go for weeks without a problem. Other times it will play up after 2 or 3 miles.

I have replaced the Spark plugs, Leads, dizzy cap, points & condenser. When I Stripped and cleaned the carb I found broken gaskets (replaced) also exhaust manifold bolts loose and one was missing.

When explaining to nice man in parts at local LR dealers noticd that his diagram showed a heat shield that goes around side and rear of exhaust manifold. this is missing on my motor Should I replace it or not?

Also there is a hole in the exhaust manifold that allows gas to reach the bottom of the inlet manifold what purpose does this serve?

Thanks in anticipation Paul H

If you mean the hole that is apparent between the two when you split the inlet and exhaust manifolds, it is called a "hot spot" and is to allow the exhaust to warm the inlet, helping running when cold. If the gasket/plate between the two is not sealed you will get funny symptoms, but it doesnt sound like that is the problem.

Might be worth checking the rest of the fuel line, could be an intermittant problem with the lift pump (electrical ones check connections, or a diaphram failure on mechanical pumps), blocked fuel filter, sedimentor bowl, or pickup pipe.

I'd say it sounds more like a fueling problem rather than an ignition one too.

Check the breathers in the tank & also check the fuel pump etc.

Paul,

This sounds very much like carburettor icing. Where is your air intake pointing? It doesn't need to be freezing for this to happen. This is just a general response about the symptoms - I have no idea about the arrangement under the bonnet of modern Landrovers.

Good luck

Similar problem with my 1986 90 2.5 petrol. After a lot of expensive replacement bits, like the carb, it turned out to be the petrol pump needed replacing which isn't that expensive. There is an in line fuel filter, in front of the tank in the 90, which would be worth looking at first, replacement elements are available, but if it's never been off it can be a bugger to undo IME.

If you can get a shield or know a person who can make you one then why not, it stops other bits getting too warm and again helps to direct heat up to the inlet manifold, only useful in a cold climate though.

The hole is to allow exhaust heat to warm the inlet manifold.

My 1987 2.5 petrol 90 had similar problems when I bought it. Coughed and baulked at 50. Refurbed carb, plugs points no joy. Turned out to be the fuel filter on the driver's side bulkhead outrigger. Had to file the bolt head underneath a size smaller, it had been well munged by the previous owner, probably not changed for years.

The carburettor on the 2.5 is a Weber I think and most Webers have a filter where the fuel inlet is on the carb, usually a brass bolt head type thing underneath.

I have a second hand one of these heatshields if you want it.
