200tdi - Is this anything to worry about?
- 04-08-2005

I have a 200tdi 90 with 148,000 miles.
I took out the K&N air filter today to clean it and found oil in the
filter casing...
With the engine ticking over the oil (vapour / mist) is visibly coming
from the breather pipe that fastens to the air filter casing.
Is this somthing to worry about (and fix) or is it to be expected on
an engine with this mileage?
What will happen if I leave it - Im thinking nothing other than
topping up with oil because most of the vapour will be sucked into the
turbo and burned??
I am assuming the only fix is to replace pistons and rings (and
possibly re-bore)?
I am fairly confident about stripping and re-building the engine but
what sort of cost would i be looking at if i have to replace pistons
and rings?
Thoughts and advice appreciated.

Re: 200tdi - Is this anything to worry about?
I found this problem Jon, and to be honest I think most of it was down
to the air filter. I retro fitted a 200tdi into my (was) 2.5TD and
because of where the new Allisport intercooler sat I put a K&N type in
as a stopgap. As you probably know on the regular air filter set up
the pipe goes from the breather on the side of the block to the air
filter casing. Without this pipe the breather system doesnt work
properly.
There is pressure inherent in any engine and it may be as simple as a
blocked breather. Try removing it and cleaning it out and see how you
get on.
Vapours are ok. It's when the vehicle starts "chugging" from the oil
filler cap that there is bad news!
As long as it doesnt chuck out huge amounts of oil then you are almost
certainly OK.
Have a look round the bak of the vehicle, are there oil spots on the
back door? If not she's fairly oil tight.
I found some on mine the other day and panicked until I realised that
the steering pump was leaking! Phew!

Re: 200tdi - Is this anything to worry about?
Many thanks for the reply. Good news (I hope). No excess pressure
blowing vapour from the filler cap.
I do have oil spots on the back door, but thats another (transfer box)
story!!
thanks again.
