300tdi turbo tweaks

Have tweaked my fuel pump as has been suggested.

What about turning up the boost slightly on the turbo - don't want to go too far.

How do I go about it - I know bugger all about diesels - always been a V8 man myself.

you need to buy a boost gauge and pipe it up from the fitting in rear of inlet manifold .

to increase boost you shorten the wastegate rod , a 1/4" length change will give about 0.3bar difference .

there is a circlip on the pin of wastegate pin which holds the rod in place, this is easy to remove as it has a u loop in one end .

if you increase the boost by shortening the rod then you need to be able to pull the rod under some tension so it will go back on the pivot pin .

300tdi landrover wastegate and rod are under the manifold and difficult to get at and work on but discoveries i think have wastegate on top of manifold so are easy to work on .

make sure you grip the rod connected to wastegate diaphragm with mole grips and undo the retaining nut with a spanner [10mm] before removing rod itself .

i have actually reduced my boost from 1.2bar down to 0.8bar because i was using too much fuel and i want better MPG .

if you increase boost pressure then the diaphragm in the injector pump will probably be pushed down lower thus increasing fuel rate , but you can also adjust the AFC starwheel under the diaphragm [top of pump] and screw it in to lower the spring seat pressure of its spring and allow more fuel in under lower boost pressures .

you can rotate the diaphragm to the 6 oclock or 9 oclock position , ie towards outer wing or towards servo .

the increase main fuel metering rate you screw in the adjuster located on rear of injector pump , it has 13mm locknut and a 6mm threaded rod sticking out with a screwdriver slot in end, it may be covered by a plastic tamperproof cover but this can be prised off and discarded .

you may well get lots of black smoke from exhaust , to some extent this can be adjusted by the "smoke adjuster" which is located under the blanking plug on top of diaphragm housing . you prise out the 20mm dia ali bung and reveal a 13mm locknut and a torx style grub screw .

unscrew this to raise the height limit of diaphragm , thus moving the taper metering rod up and closing the jet orifice slightly .

hope this helps . make a not of all previous settings so you can go back to them .

realistically boost pressure between 0.8 and 1.2 bar wont show you much difference in performance feeling but at 1.2 bar you will notice hotter exhaust temps and will possibly "smell " it when going up long hills .

yes you can adjust everything up so that it goes like stink and does

90mph , but at expense of MPG which will probably drop to around 20mpg .

cheers. ian
