4.0L V8 Carburetor Jetting

Hi All,

I've got a 4.0L petrol V8 with an Edelbrock (Weber?) 1404 carburetor (500 cfm) on it. I'm worried that this may be a bit much carb out of the box and if re-jetting it and/or playing with the metering rods may help.

At idle, I notice quite a smell from the tailpipe, which I'm guessing is unburnt petrol. Sometimes at idle, there's a bit of smoke, which doesn't appear to be oil (it's certainly not using any -- the engine has less than 2000 miles on it).

I've read that you can compute the required cfm various ways:

cfm = ((ci * MaxRPM) / 3456) * 0.85

cfm = (ci * 2) * 0.85

etc. (the Internet is full of this)

I've done the math half a dozen different ways and most times I come up with between 350 and 450 cfm required. My engine is factory stock and I have no visions of insane performance. I just want to burn all the petrol I pay for! All in all, my Land Rover gets passable mileage (between 13 and 15 mpg depending on how it's driven); AFIK that's reasonable for a SIIa 109 sitting on a D110 chassis with an R380/LT245 behind. Still, if I could squeeze an extra 5% or 10%, I'd be thrilled!

Does anyone have experience with this carb? I'd love to hear any recommendatons regarding rejetting and playing with the metering rods. I'm considering buying the Edelbrock calibration kit (part #1486) for this carburetor and going as conservative as possible to see what happens.

Thanks!
