4.6 V8 97 Disco ... manifold issue :(

Help!

I took my manifold off to change the gaskets ... and now it won't fit :( Can get most of the bolts in, but two refuse point blank, and if you get them started they go in at an angle. What am I doing wrong?

Just got it back on the road and now it's broken ..... :(

It's shrunk with the heat, as cast iron is apt to do. File the holes to suit the studs (and don't forget to check that the surface that mates against the head is still flat).

Which bit is cast iron then ?

Also try screwing all of them in loosely *before* you tighten any of them. It might be an idea to remove the manifold again and check that the bolts you say are going in at an angle will screw in first by hand easily and maybe clean the holes out with a tap.

Assume we're talking exhaust manifold? Sometimes you can do it by having all the bolts slightly loose so you can move it around when lining bolts up.

Mine both fitted perfectly on the 101. Im not sure they had ever been off before as they had no gaskets.

Try doing them all loosely and then tighten then gradually. the 101 manual says start in the centre and work outwards tightening them gradually.

Got mine to do... again! Not looking forward to it now, had the gasket on standby for several months. H'mmm

You've got the manifold gaskets the right way up haven't you? They aren't quite symertrical...(sp?)

they don't have gaskets as standard. Mind, I never saw the need to fit them.

key point is that NONE of the bolts must be even finger tight before they're all in. You need to put 'em in so it's rattly-loose, then once they're all started, tighten in an even pattern.

Austin Shackles uttered summat worrerz funny about:

101 Manifolds warp and crack like the SS Enterprise. If Gaskets help save the day and reduce the likelyhood then I would recommend every 101 fits them when the manifolds have to come off. They are after all rarer than Rocking horse do do.

Besides.. your not fully in appreciation of the joys of 101 Ownership until you've been in all the positions in the Karma-Headoff manual.

My guess is anyone who tries to hold a converstaion with Tom over the next few weeks will end up also talking with there head on one side as though on an imaginary phone whislt dislocating one or the other wrist for non verbal communication, and feeling around behind themselves for inanimate objects that teleport themselves a further 3 ft away out of reach.

Nice way of putting it! Its definately true though!. I was very tempted to enlarge the side access panels and make those 2 struts above the carbs removable at points!

I dont know how they make so many of those bolts such bastards to get at! It takes skill to arrange it such that you can _just_ get your arm in to pretty much everything if you approach from the right angle..

My knees ache a bit too - I think tis because you have to keep clibming up into the cab and then back down again.

It runs again though! :). Just changed the oil and run it for 30 secs. I shall go top it up again and let it warm up in a minute. Hope ive fixed it - exhaust was very smokey for that short run but hopefully it is just burning all the shit out of the exhaust and such..

Symmetrical, nearly right :-)

Don't tighten them up too much. IIRC about 20lbft is enough (might even be 15?) with gaskets. It allows the manifold a little bit of movement as it heats and cools rather than putting it under stress which cast iron does not like ...

I think it is 20. Did mine with the torque wrench cos i was feeling all proper (and dont want to have the head off again for more helicoils for snapped manifold bolts...)
