'97 build RR 4.0 and O2 sensors

Hmm. I've been told by the local dealer that my car needs a new left O2 sensor, price around $450AU, and that I should also replace the right side one at the same time- but it's around $1100. Symptoms are a rough idle & backfire that have since mutated into heavy fuel consumption (330 k's/90 litres, down from usual 400 round town).

The part is the AMR6244- aftermarket 4-wire versions available for around $120 US online. The sites that sell them don't mention different prices for left & right ones though- any ideas why not?

I don't have a part no. for the right side one.

What should I do? Are they easy to fit? I've read that the connectors are a bit of a pig.

Thanks for your thoughts ladies & gents.

The sensors are both the same, don't understand why your dealer is saying different. Fairly easy to change, undo connector by pushing down clip and pulling apart, then unscrew O2 sensor using a spanner, though can be a bit tight at first. Replacement is the usual reversal of removal. IIRC, the Australian spec '97 RR doesn't light the check engine lamp when the O2 sensors go into fault, and the symtoms you have could easily be traced to these. I'd change both at the same time, especially if they've done more than 70K miles or so.
