Air suspension, BAH!

fing DII air suspension.

Just got home after being recovered from the M6 J20 nortbound. As I went round the motorway round about the air suspension light came on, but committed to joining the motorway. Going down the slip road handling was "different", join the motorway at about 50mph and the back end is bouncing up and down in a most un settling way. Pull over onto hard shoulder, gets out, back end right down on the bump rubbers. Thinks (hopefully!) that maybe the computer has thrown a wobbly, switch on, start up no joy back end doesn't rise... Still I guess 3 1/2hrs from initial phones calls to be home 120+ miles from break down isn't so bad.

Now to get the damn thing moved from here to the dealer, I'm glad I took out what appeared to be expensive breakdown insurance cover now. B-)

Yes I did Derby home to Brighton on the bump stops once. I have one of those kits they sell on EBay fitted now so with a bit of compressed air I'm back up although no control and it's whinging

35MPH max.

I'm rechipping my P38 as it is intermittent (works for the dealer sweet as can be) but in the process I think I've located a broken wire which might just have been the problem all along.

Good luck with it nigelH

My subaru did that so I fitted coils all round for the price of a new compressor and the rear air bags!

I so hope you didn't get towed by the local company 'Egertons.' They've been on Watchdog a few times, you'll need a shed load of cash to pay for storage and recovery.

Local to where? Warrington or here (Middle of the North Pennines)?

But no it was Ilott & Son, no complaints about them. Now back home after having the thing taken to Carlisle, don't know what's wrong with it yet. In theory this break down shouldn't cost me a penny because of the breakdown insurance. I wonder how much two recoveries of 122 and 22 miles would cost?

I might investigate, depending on what they find. Presumably it's a couple of T taps and valves? Normally route the line from a bag to the compressor but in the event of failure turn the tap to the valve and inflate/deflate as required. Could be useful as getting the thing(*) on/off the recovery trucks was fun as the tow plate grounds...

(*) Once its earned some brownie points back I might stop calling it "the thing". B-)

Around about Jn 17 Sandbach/Arclid. They cover the M6 for a fair bit north and south. As reported by Watchdog, they as masters at producing invoices, keep your eyes wide open :-(

I'll leave you to judge, they took a small tractor off my trailer which was left for less than 1/2 hour on the hard shoulder at Stockport with a wheel missing (four wheel trailer) whilst a puncture was mended locally, but first tried to load trailer *and* load and in doing so, damaged trailer, left trailer there, then charged £350 to get the vehicle that they had taken off out of their premises. Trafford Park I think they were based, Manchester anyway. What gives them the right to do that in such a short space of time, and who authorised it?

The Police might *if* it constituted a hazard but I wouldn't expect that to happen without a battenburg cake attending and I would expect them to pick up the tab. I assume you had used the motorway phones to let motorway control know you were there?

IMHO it's some form of fraud, it's not theft as there is no intent to permenantly deprive you of your property.

Mate of mine borrowed my trailer so I don't know about that but they were there when he got back with the wheel and they wouldn't let him put it on and when I got there not long after, the trailer was left there unattended and empty so I wouldn't say it was a hazard as there were no cones left round it and it hadn't been there very long.

What about the £350?, that wasn't returned.

Near or offside? I can sort of see their view if off side but still strikes me as rather officious, especially with them present no doubt with lots of bright flashing lights. How long does it take to put a whee= l on FFS... Were they really the Police or the Highways Agency people?

That's the fraud. Obtaining money by deception or intent to defraud OWTTE.

As a simple mech. eng., all this electrickery is way over my head, so can't tell if they are ahead, behind or going in a completely different direction to you, but thought it might be of interest.

Very interesting but a very different approach although we have selected some similar parts. Probably some ideas to nick there.

Here's my story so far.

Yes I know... Doing it is one thing... Writing it up on the web is dyed-in-the-wool nerd. 8)
