On my 2000 rr a message has just appeared on the dash to let me know there's summat up with the srs airbag, is this likely to be a major ,ie expensive repair or just a fault code needing reset?

Most likely cause is the steering wheel rotary coupler. These can be tested and replaced as a DIY job but they ain't cheap. I paid about GBP171 for mine around last October.
Took about an hour and a half to replace.
The most diagnostic information you'll get out of the ECU is which airbag is open/short circuited, so a diagnostic report will be of limited value, but will at least tell you which airbag is wrong.
Just pray it's not an airbag module itself. The drivers side is the cheapest at GBP 912+VAT, and I didn't get an extra digit in there, either!
