Alarm insurance query....

Hi there

Hopefully someone can help me out, I've a 94 300tdi discovery and have recently moved insurers - and it's turning into a nightmare! - I applied for cover online and when the question about alarm systems came up I ticked off LRSS, as I've come across that in the owners bible before, and remember back in the distant past when I first had the car there was a scabby sticker in the window with LRSS or similar on it - the option I really wanted was "original factory fitted" but that wasn't to be....

Now they're asking for the alarm/immobiliser certificate, ho hum....

Google's not giving away a lot on what I do or don't have working when I press the remote. So if anyone amonst all you experts can tell me more - the remote has a single button, and there's also a flashing red light on the middle of the dash which flashes away to itself, indicators flash three times on locking and once on opening - also only flashes once on locking if my remote's batteries are on their way out.... is this purely an alarm, or an alarm/immobiliser? ...and please don't suggest I try stealing it to find out ;-)

Cheers

Mac

Whatever you've got, surely you won't have any certificate for a 94 model, try another insurer. They should know what the standard system is for a particular model.

The policy is already a month old or more, and you're right, no certificates other than what was in the owners manual. The car's a bit of a shed to be honest - only keep it to get the dog onto the moors! - she refuses to ride in anything else, Collie's aren't stupid! I try and keep it going as it's done over 230000 miles - curious to see how long it'll go on for really...

I had this when whe had a '97 Disco about 8 or 9 years back. I think they settled for me sending them a photo copy of the owners manual detailing the alarm and imobiliser features. I can't recall which Insurance comany it was but highly likely to have been one of the specialist Landrover ones at the time as we had LPG fitted to it.

Thanks for your reply... just been on the phone to them and they also want a tracking device! ...will re-post to see if anyone else has had cover through DirectLine with the same model and year. Cheers

They want a tracking device on a 16/17 year old vehicle? They just don't want your business! Go elsewhere!

I'm stuck in Norway at the moment working - the wife's trying to sort all this out at home and not getting anywhere with them, seems they still consider the car a theft risk hence the nonsense about Thatcham approved alarm etc - I'll be looking for a different company as soon as I get back to blighty, but in the meantime I'm curious to see if anyone else has come across this with the same model and age discovery....

Try the Caravan Club

When I got my disco (TDI 300 on a 96 Plate )

They didn't even ask

When I queried them they said they were able to check details from the chassis and registration numbers

They already KNEW it had a Thatcham alarm

When we retired we started to look at a large twin axle caravan circa £25K ( A traveller Friendly van ;-))) !!! )

We soon changed our minds when we found out the additional and annual costs of trakers alarms and other security devises

Two years ago the insurance for the disco was just over £200, last year it was just over £300 , this year it got to £420

Think next year we'll have a shop around ,

It wont be Churchill though , Check out their T's & C's they're not what you'd like to find out AFTER an accident

They may be CHEAP , but you don't get owt for nowt

Adrian Glass might be worth a look at

You can do the digging from here

Lad says you get better discounts if you're in a Land Rover Club

He should know I've taught him to be canny with his Brass

Thanks to everyone for their help, as a matter of interest I just went through their online application saga again and not once was Thatcham approved system mentioned.... think I'll drop the insurance ombudsman a line as it seems their imposing conditions after agreeing the contract?

Just one tracking device? Which bit do they want to follow once it's been stolen and broken up?

Don't fit a tracker on a twin axle caravan. Once they've identified the field in which the pikies are situated you're on your own.

WHAT! on a 94 Disco with 230,000 miles on the clock. What planet are they on FFS. Fitting a tracking device would cost more than the things is worth! Are they going to pay?

I've sort of been through this loop with insurance companies before, I firmly put the ball into their court by saying it has the factory fitted system for that make/model/year and get them to find out what it is.

Direct Line are probably not the best of companies for something like an old Land Rover. Have a wander across to one of the comparison sites and see what the "going rate" is. Just because you have a policy with 'em doesn't mean you can't terminate it and get a partial refund.

Ask her to ring up the NFU.

Shop around NOW! My motor is only 6 3/4 years old, not 15 and my insurance was =A3417 last November.

That's for fully comp, upgraded courtesy car, =A3100 or =A3150 excess, protected no claims, kept on drive, SDP & My business use (not just commuting), one other named driver, vehicle is an 04 DII TD5 Landmark. I do live out in the sticks so the postcode weighting is probably one of the lowest though.

If you can get hold of the name of the original dealer they should hold a copy of a little green credit card sized plastic card with all the original security information on it.

...that'd be so long ago I'd probably need to exhume him before asking questions.... ;-)

Doesn't help but I did write off my previous Y Reg Discovery in Nov

2008. IIRC the cheque was over =A37k.

Not a great deal you can do about that, other than move. B-(
