Alternators - again sorry!

Cock Up Pete here!

After the recent threads on alternators I ordered a 100A A127 type alternator for my Defender (200Tdi). The only alternator at John Craddocks was for a 300TDi, it seemed as if it would fit, however when I compare a 200TDi alternator and a 300TDi alternator it's a different hand.

The bottom mounting is the same, so how easy is it to use the 300TDi alternator and create a new bracket at the top to tension the belt?

Cheers

Peter

Not familiar with this one but in the old days you used to remove one long bolt.. rotate the casting nearest the pully in the desired direction and reinstall the bolt.

Time has moved on now so you probably need to sell ten grannies and a specialist tool to do it.

Lee,

Good suggestion. But! I've just had a look, this alternator has an asymmetrical body and as I need to move it 90 deg, it's not possible.

The 300TDi is indeed a different unit. A133, I think. Check if your pulley fits it, before you start inventing.

The flange-change on the alternators applied to the older ones held together by 3 bolts, with the 2 of the main fixing bolts in line with eachother. These can be converted by rotating the flange and drilling out the thread from the tensioner fixing hole.

Mine went west at the weekend on the disco 200, thought no probs, got one from the 300, and found similar mounting issues. Then remembered the series at the stables, battled the alternator off, and found it was differently handed.

Ordered one off the nice chap on ebay in Brum in the end - an a127 compatible jobby only downside is its a 48hr delivery.
