Auto box probs or not?

HI all,

I have a Disco TD5 auto on a 04 plate

Tonight on the way home from work i stopped at an busy island and waited for a gap, the next car came round the island and indicated to leave the island at the exit before me. so i started to accelerate but the car did not leave at the exit but came round! so i floored the pedal.

now to the problem.

The car accelerated hard but when it reached the range where it should have change up into 2nd it did not, it was like it disconnected the drive to change for a second but did not change gear then it engaged drive then disconnected drive then engaged drive just like you had hit a limiter or something and this process went on for about 5 -10 seconds it would not change up? this made me lift my foot, then it changed up like normal.

It only does it under hard acceleration

Oil was changed in box around Oct/Nov 2009 apart from this it runs and changes okay

It's difficult sometimes to match different descriptions of the same problem but this seems very similar to something that I have experienced.

I don't recognise a 'disconnection' of drive or failure to change up but a 'limiter' and surging at that point and only under foot to the floor acceleration from a steady 30/40mph is strangely familiar. (I don't know about from a standing start as I only indulge in that when pitched against boy racers at traffic lights on a streaming wet road!)

It turned out to be a faulty engine inlet mass air sensor. You could temporarily disconnect the plug for this and see it it makes any difference.

Thanks Dougal,

Will give it a try. when i said it was like disconnecting the power maybe a better description would be like kangarooing with the engine at around 4000 rpms has soon as i lifted up about halfway the kangarooing stopped and it changed.

Yes, easing off slightly and trying again always worked for me. The 'limiting' point where this occurred was below the engine speed at which I would expect the 'box to change up.

I think that you've got the same.

New Flow Meter on the way (£30) not to bad.
