Bargain D1 V8i

Collecting tomorrow, a 1996 D1 V8i, 12 mths MOT, FSH and 6 months tax for £700 !!

Hope it's a good 'un.

Any obvious things to watch on the V8's? Had one before that was ok but tended to cut out sporadically so hoping this one will be a little better but for the money who cares :-)

Yes. Watch for the fuel gauge sinking like a stone when you put your foot down....

Oops you're right.

That V8 sound is so worth it though :-)

Unfortunately lot of truth in V8 passes everything except a filling station! Try getting it convered to LPG, same sound half the cost or better.

Except it will cost you a good £1500-£2500 to do it. And the fuel consumption on LPG will be worse.

So assuming 18mpg on petrol, 16mpg op LPG Petrol at 118p/litre LPG at 64p/litre

Saving on LPG: 12p/mile. Assuming £1500 to convert

Time to Payback Conversion: 12,500 miles So If you're using it occasionally, that's probably in the region of 3 years. Could pay it back in a year if you drive a lot....

Hmm. lot to be said for buying converted then! Can someone please explain why consumption worse on Gas? the calorific value for gas is better than petrol. as is the octane rating so shouldn't it be better?

For a modern gas injection system , yes. But this engine will happily run on the older kit which is much cheaper. I ran my 98 V8i Defender on an IMPCO system which is open loop variable geometry for 96k miles, no problems.
