Buying private....

Hi all,

For the last few weeks I've been helping my father look for a Disco 3 privately. We've seen plenty around in the likes of autotrader/local papers. He's looking to spend around =A326k/=A328k on one (an SE or HSE post 05 plate) and at that money I'm a little concerned that any saving's made by buying private may be better spent buying one from a LR dealer as you've got more comeback (30 day money back) and they should have any little issue ironed out if his paying 'retail money'. I've always bought private in the past (a 90 and a 300tdi Disco) but these were all sub =A38k.

Anyone thoughts appreciatted - and I've always avoided Dealers like the plague before :-)

cheers.

No experience of spending that kind of money, but if I could, it would definitely be a dealer, wouldn't risk that kind of money (or even 1/2 of it) on a private sale with no kind of protection. I also generally avoid dealers, and even normal garages. Just my own view of course :-) Andrew

Look at eh warranty given, and also consider the difference in price. Then consider what you might consider worst case failure - engine maybe and how much to put it right.

Only you can decide.

At that price I would buy from a dealer, much better comeback.

Dealer, no question - you will pay a bit more, but you will get all that back and more with peace of mind. At that age, it should still be under manufacturer's warranty, but it will be a lot easier getting anything fixed if you've bought the vehicle from them in the first place. I regard £26K as very serious money indeed, and I would not risk that on a private sale under any circumstances. If the extra cost is an issue, go for a slightly older vehicle instead. Remember it's a Land Rover we are talking about. You WILL need that warranty.

I wouldn't be advising this on a "normal" Land Rover purchase, but this isn't normal in my world.

I go with the guys dealer at that money and a Land Rover specialist the technology warrants it. IMO no point in getting in a situation where the seller is out of his depth if it goes titsup. Derek

Yep

Go to a main dealer and haggle like hell. I just bought a D2 from independant dealer, got problems, dealer disappeared!!!! Broke my own rule about only buying from a main dealer, lesson learned! This was only a 2002 D2 TD5 ES so considerably less than your D3!

Austin,

I'm down south from you in Herts/Beds. Nearest dealer is Pilling Land Rover at Welwyn Garden City or Perry's at Luton.

Cheers
