Call me thick !

Call me thick - but is the discovery body aluminium or steel. I'm looking to buy a 4x4 as living in north wales theres a few places to use them !. I've seen a few discos for under 3K (dont want to spend any more) and a few defender 90 TDI's

which would be best ? what should I look for ? and any info on green lanes around Anglesey and Snowdonia would be helpful

Cheers, a 4 X 4 newbie.

Body is ally apart from the roof, which is steel.

Discos are typically better value in terms of condition of vehicle for the buck. They're also good offroad, there's not all that much between them in reality. 90s are more of a purist vehicle/tonka toy, but the residuals hold better (good for seller, less good for buyer).

You may find for 3 grand you end up spending a lot on maintenance, whereas if you spent 4 grand on a good one you could save yourself the extra cash pretty quickly. If you're looking for a toy (as opposed to something practical) how about a Series?

I'd go for a Disco but suggest you have a play in both and see which you prefer, as it's largely a personal thing.

Okely dokely .. you're thick ... ;)

Body is Al but the roof is steel ..

I prefer Disco for all round comfort and ease of use as family transport. If it's _just_ as a second car and mainly for greenlaning and off-road I must admit to probably still plumping for the Disco. Since I've had one it's done just as much, if not more, than many friends Defender and Series vehicles, but in a tad more comfort and with a decent stereo too .. ;)

On or around Fri, 2 Jan 2004 20:31:49 -0000, "StaffBull" enlightened us thusly:

You're a lot more likely to find a TD 90 than a TDi. Discos under 3K are to be had, but check the floor for corrosion (especially along the sides and the rear wheel arch/rear floor area) also for high-milers keep an eye out for the infamous gearbox output shaft problem, which manifests itself as excessive play in the driveline and noticeable clunk/clank when either going from forward to reverse or when coming on and off the power in e.g. 2nd gear, said noise from the middle of the vehicle. Clanks thusly from the front are probably CV joints, and are easy enough to replace.

TD 90 not as good as a TDi, of course... but not a bad thing if the engine's good. Look for indications that it's been well-serviced and not thrashed.

Overall... 90 better off-road as it's more compact. Disco much better as a car, especially if you have more than 2 people to carry. Disco more comfy on-road, but wallows around more thanks to softer springing if tanking along.
