Car choice?

right. Me & she who makes the decisions have been debating this for ages, I wondered if anyone on here had any suggestions:

Now: We have a 300tdi 90 hard top, 120k miles, reliable, solid, noisy, needs a bit of work which we use for towing and my daily car (work from home or runs to the station) and a saab 9-5 estate (2001, 50k miles) which is dull but huge & comfy for long stuff.

Problem: Kid on way. Saab bloody dull. 90 not ideal for kids. Want something practical (big), something that can tow trailer & 2 horses and something fun for me to thrash.

I recon we swap both cars for a (deisel) P38 rangie. She's heard bad stories about them and wants to go for an older new shape disco.

That'll then be 'her' car and I'll have to get something small and nasty for me (do you think she'll notice an Elise?)

what do you think about P38 vs disco?

I had Triplets, (well not me - the wife!) and had a 200Tdi CSW. The kids love it, its been great for the family. I must admit though I had a...Peugeot 405 1.6GL estate when they were first born. I guess the Landrover ride is a bit harsh for small babies.

On or around Mon, 28 Jun 2004 11:55:29 +0100, mike t enlightened us thusly:

disco a damn' sight cheaper to run, and to buy probably. I'd say go for brace of decent 300 TDis...

they're actually quite thrashable as is, and you can easily stiffen up the suspension a bit if you don't like the body roll.

if you want a more fun noise, hunt a tidy V8i and gas it.

you could of course have a 300 TDi disco for her and hunt yerself a decent

3.9 rangie, and gas that. There are some pretty tidy 3.9 rangies around for quite reasonable money.

Slightly left-field suggestion - have you considered a Subaru Legacy / Outback 3.0? My Dad's is pretty good fun for a big auto, and I was very tempted before plumping for the Volvo on the basis of running costs and local dealer availability.

Swap the Saab for one. It will make a pretty decent tow vehicle. Put a bit of cash into a good late 300 V8 or modified TDi Discovery.

I wouldn't go for a P38 unless you've run out of other avenues for burning money or you feel lucky.

We also looked at one when we got our Disco .. a seriously great piece of kit .. ;)

Very nice, very controllable, powerslides ... wet, dry, tarmac, dirt, didn't matter it went where we pointed it and how we wanted it to go. Shed-loads of power and torque, a rare combination, and a great sized boot. The only reason we went for a Disco is that we also wanted something to get really muddy in, and an Outback just doesn't have the ground clearance for the quarries we use near us .. ;)

Yes, you're right. Big Impreza with auto gearbox really. Why did I buy the Volvo again?
