Changing Diff Oil

OK so I'm a complete novice when it comes to fixing anything mechanical but am going to try to change the rear diff oil in my Disco 300 tomorrow.

I've bought 3 litres of the special EP80/90 oil from Halfrauds (at £9 each litre!!) but am guessing I should try and flush it a bit as it sucked muddy water in through the breather tube.

Plan is to drain it first, then add around half a litre of the new oil, drive a few hundred yards slowly, drain again then fill to the recommended

2.7 litres

Any other tips?.

Don't drain it until you've loosened the filler plug .. they can be a right b'stard, 'specially if the diff pan's rusty .. ;)

Yep thought that might be the case, will loosen the filler first.

Once you have been around the block a couple of times after the final fill check thre level again. Some will be taken up in the axle tubes.

And of course while you are there sort the breather tubes.

:o)

All done, piece of cake (if a bit messy), thankfully the filler and drain plugs came out easily.

Is there a way of checking the level? The guide said add 2.7l so I bunged in nearly all the 3l I bought.

Also extended the breather tubes up to the interior!

Keep filling till it runs out the filler hole... the filler is the level indicator.
