Charge warning lamp

My charge warning lamp stays on after I start the engine and the voltmeter stays around half-way, until I rev the engine a little then the lamp goes out and the voltmeter moves well to the right, even back on tickover. What's that all about then?

It could be the alternator getting a bit old, but check the drive belt too. It might also be a bad connection between the lamp and the alternator.

Alternator is brand new, drive belt is worn but looks quite servicable. Bad connection possibly.. Thanks.

A lot of alternators do this the will not start charging until it reaches a certain RPM then its all OK mines always done this which makes it a bugger when you jump start it as it fires up first turn(1) of the key you disconnect jump starter and it stops start again a quick blip on the throttle and everything's OK

(1) that's buggered it now it'll never start again

quite common, especially on diesels if you fire it up on idle. The output hasn't gone up enough to trigger it into "charging" mode.

as soon as you blip the throttle, the output goes up and the alternator cuts in. it'll not cut out at normal idle, typically.

mine's been cutting out quite a bit the last 2 days, on account of water on the belt... must check belt tension...
