Cutch problem 110 def

Yup Im here again, more woes. Defender 110 M reg.

57k miles. Had a clutch fitted last Friday as it was just starting to slip. Nothing else wrong. Got it back Sat morn but terrible banging like front prop loose on its return. Only when slowing with clutch depressed it seems. Only did 20 miles in it and thought STOP. Looked at it and 1 nut missing from prop, 1 nut loose. The clutch specialist recovered it Monday, got it back today. Supposedly fine. It aint, same noise on over-run as before. after depressing clutch, bang, bang, getting worse as it slows. However diminishes if slightly pull on transmission brake. (Know I shouldn't) I return it, practically calls me a liar, says it must have been there before !!! Asks me what he should do, I say fix it !!! They are advertised as 4x4 clutch & gearbox specialists. Any ideas from you helpful folk? Really need it fixing by Friday or are going to have to hire a pick up as going to an event at the weekend, and folk relying on me to take many items. HOPE YOU CAN HELP !!!! Stuart

Over-adjusted transmission brake. Slacken it off a little at the adjuster at the drum.

However it's unlikely that this was adjusted as part of the clutch change so look also at the possibility of the lever/cable adjustment being wrong.

Thanks for the quick reply. Should the lever (which one) or cable have been touched? Really upset as I have been looking forward to our event this weekend for a year now. Would winding off the transmission brake so it dont work cure it for this weekend you think? Weird how it did not do it before the clutch renewal. Stuart

So if I was a gambling man, I could say give me back my £500 if I cure it?? Do you think? Maybe they have routed the t Brake cable wrong that is what is putting tension on it. Stuart

I'm not familiar with this particular setup but have experienced it elsewhere.

If they approached the clutch change by removing the gearbox they will have messed with the linkage/cable. Perhaps that part is OK but they 'did you a favour' by adjusting the brake when putting it back together but went too far.

You could isolate the problem by disconnecting the lever such that the brake cannot be applied. If the problem now disappears it's the linkage that you should check. If the problem is still there knock the drum adjustment back until you're happy then reconnect the lever.

For speed, just knock the adjustment back first - you've nothing to lose. You won't need to wind it right off. If that fails you'll have to be more systematic.

Sounds suspiciously like the symptoms on my RRC. It only happened in one direction and that was at manoeuvring speeds and was a gentle, repeated hesitation in the travel of the vehicle. Yes, a gentle application of the transmission brake stopped it. Mentioned to my spannerer that I had adjusted the transmission brake when it went in for other things.

The invoice included a line thus: "un-adjusted transmission brake FOC".

HTH and may allay some of your fears.

Dougal thee is an angel looking over me. I rang the "clutch specialist this am , 8 am in fact. Told him the info. NOT INTERESTED AT ALL told me transfer box goosed, and a rear wheel bearing a bit dodgy that was what was causing the knocking. He would do no more end of story. My son picked up 110 at 1pm, still same, so when i got back did your adjustment IT IS FINE !!!!!!!! Wheel bearing done, 1 hr & £20 Thank you, took a LOAD of my mind. No doubt about naming them now Cleckheaton Clutch & Gearbox Centre

100% useless. Thet advertise as 4x4 specialists !!!!! Please do accept my sincere thanks for your info. Put my mind at rest as a good few folk relying on me this weekend. Why do I volunteer ????????? Cheers Stuart

May I suggest you report them to trading standards? At least that way if another poor sod has issues and complains, there's already a file open on them - that'll make trading standards take a very close look at them. Badger.

That sounds like a result! So glad that we got it right.
