Im looking for some quick guidance as Landrover Customer Services are closed. Does anybody know the maximum roof weight on a 2003 110 Defender. On our 1999 110's it was 150 Kg including the roof rack, for some reason its now 75 Kg including the roof rack.
Can anyone confirm or deny this reduction in weight ??
Remember a lot of people put a lot more weight on the roof than the guidance figures without problems. I've had a good couple of hundred kilos on the old Disco (plus the weight of the roof rack). Obviously you have to watch that the vehicle isn't totally top-heavy and drive accordingly.
The problem is we are a Mountain Rescue Team and if my previous statement is correct we cant upgrade the Defenders, the roof rack we have must be about
50 Kg's the lightest stretcher we carry is about 25 Kg so straight away we are up to the 75 Kg limit and got a shedload of stuff with nowhere to go :(
Somebody will give a definitive answer but ISTR you can get 75KG *plus* the weight of the standard LR roof rack. Don't take my word for it, somebody will be able to clarify.

I Think the problem would be retaining your warantee etc.
As stated, the roof can generally handle quote a lot more. Once we happened upon a lion in one of the local Game Parks and all my mates jumped out the windows on to the roof rack (not a easy feat getting through the rear windows on a serIII wagon) so that lot probably weighed about 250kgs plus figure about 70 for the rack.
As David said you want to avoid high speed cornering and such, and you would probably be quite careful traversing side slops with a lot of mass on the roof.
I know the guys at Toyota testing div here in South Africa (no flaming please) and they do quite a lot of testing for special purpose vehicles and aftermarket add ons. This way people who have done non stadard things (eg the mines all fit rear discs to their underground hilux's) can keep the manufacturer warantee and everone is happy. I am sure you could get the fellows at LR to do the same for your roof rack setup. Just tell them you were also looking at a crusier!!
You could also consider one of the off road trailers that are quite popular here in SA. I believe that quite a few companies export to the UK. The problem is that any trailer seriously hampers your off road ability, and as a friend of mine pointed out, when an elephant decides it really want to go exactly where your landy is parked, you are going to have a lot of trouble performing a high speed retreat with a trailer on the back (probably not a concern in the UK I grant you).
Let us know what LR UK say, as these days I think they are more into selling shopping mall cruisers to housewives than defenders to people who willl actually use them as working vehicles.
I reckon my monster roofrack (see other thread) must weigh over 75kg and the RN used to carry a boat around on it. They tell me the handling was an absolute nightmare with the boat 'aboard'.. RIBs ain't light, so I can't believe the whole lot would come in under the 150kg mark.
That rack's still available for free BTW, - near Sleaford Lincs.
It gets better we've just realised that the Blue lights must weigh about 10 Kg's the roof rack we got, weighed in at 60 Kg so we can even put anything on the roof !!!
Hoorah, why did they change it. Like i said the 99YM says you can have 150Kg on the roof rack.
