Defender 90 oil leak / 1st-2nd shift under power

I was once told by a colleague, that "if it leaks, at least you know there is oil in there". All well and good, but I appear to have an oil leak coming from the mid/rear engine area on my Defender 90 Tdi.

It also doesn't paticularly like shifting from 1st to second gear under power.

Any ideas / suggestions??

(am happy to take a photo of said leak if it helps, but to be honest it looks like a long standing problem)

Which side - and which engine (200 or 300Tdi)?

Could be worn synchro's, could be air in the clutch etc. What steps have you taken to investigate the problem?

Hi, the engine is a 200tdi. The leak appears to be coming from the rear of the engine (towards the gearbox). Originally I thought it was coming from the sump, but there is quite a build-up under there.

I took the car to a local 'specialist', who said that he would have to have the under body / engine steam cleaned to find where the leak is coming from.

The specialst didn't actually raise the gearbox 'crunching' issue with me.

This is about as far as I have got. Bought the car two weeks back...

OK - check that the breather hose (L shaped thingie) is not cracked, and that the O ring on the cyclone filter (small plastic baked bean can) on the side of the block is not leaking wher it goes into the block.

If they are ok clean RH the side of the head (looking from the drivers seat) above no 3 and 4 cylinders (the rearmost ones) and put some very soapy water on the edge of the head gasket - does the water bubble at all? If it does - is the air filter full of oil?

I will get under and have a good look tomorrow evening (fairy liquid in hand). Is it worth having a go at it with a steam cleaner?

Will also nip down to Halfords and pick up some hydraulic fluid and attempt my first 'clutch bleed'

Will let you know how I get on!

looks like I am going to be a very busy boy - (this thing is going to pur like a kitten - even if it kills me!)

Thank you very much Richard. Also thanks to Derek for his input on this.

p.s if the cluch bleed doesn't help the gear change 'crunch', is it possible to buy new syncros for this car? if so, where would be best? paddocks?
