defender push button door lock sticking

I have a 200Tdi K plate Defender CSW with push button door locks.

It is becoming incresingly difficult to open the door from the outside with the key. When it choses to stick, no amount of (reasonable) turning force will unlock the door. When it doesn't stick it opens easily. Sometimes, a few bangs to the door around the lock area frees it, other times that doesn't work. Sticking incidents are becoming more and ore common.

Unlocking using the internal door button is smooth and requires almost no force. When the key is sticking, very gently pressure on the internal button will let the key turn.

As the the door trims are off I tried manually pushing the connecting rod between the lock barrel and the lock mechanism but that is no use, so it probably has nothing to do with the key or barrel itself.

So, in summary

- un/locking via the con-rod from the push button is fine.

- un/locking via the con-rod from the key barrel is sticking.

- very gentle assistance through the button frees the sticking.

Any comments/advice. Looks like a tedious job to strip out the door lock in the hope of spotting something.

It's difficult to say without seeing it, but I'd venture that a little oil (NOT WD40!) may free things up a bit. It's not actually that difficult to get access to the barrel to have a look - if you take it out make sure you don't lose the tumblers!

Yeah, I thought that, but I (optimistically?) hoped that it might be a common failure or design flaw in the door mechanism

I've oiled it a few times in the hope that would sort it out. The whole mechanism now runs smooth as silk when you use the door button. It's as if the lock barrel connecting rod can't push the mechanism, but with the door button pulling very gently as a guide, it all works just fine.

With the connecting rod from the barrel disconnected the barrel turns freely so I'm pretty sure it's not the barrel that's sticking.

ok - I suspect that the litle clips on the rods are knackerd, so that they twist rather than push.

Yes I would agree with Richard's diagnosis as I have the same problem on my

110 which is on the to do list. As I have already stripped the door in the past and it is the mechanical links between barrel action and internal button. At the back of the barrel there is a red plastic piece which connects to the first link, this along with all other links has slight wear. All amount to the key turned disengaging the lock to allow entry from the outside, but if I don't lift the internal button whilst holding the key in it's unlock position. I then can't exit the vehicle by the internal handle.
