diesel engine woes- advice sought

hiya gang......

right ill try to explain this as best i can, but if i waffle just ignore me, lik e the wife does , in fact we were out the other day when i saw........ooopppps sorry.

cant tell you what engine it is , on the grounds i might incriminate myself, but last night whilst i was sat on my drive, ( the doctors told me to stop sitting on my drive, p0iles and all )

i revved my engine up quite high, and i dont know why but i removed the ignition key whilst it was still revving hard, and it continued to rev, and rev, and rev, and rev, in fact i could have emptied the fuel tank before it would have stopped,

so i did it again, only this time i let the revs drop slowly, and when revs got to a certain rpm it died, and no amount of flooring it would make it rev.

some one has suggested that the rings are knackerd and its running on oil, but im not overly burning oil, i can floor it doing 30 mph in top and all i get is unburnt diesel puthering out,

it smokes a tad on start up,

anyone give me a clue as to whats wrong, and if it is rings, do any off the shelf spray type products you know the ones, do they work?

Andy

Or the sheer suction from the pump sucking fuel past the cut off solenoid.....

How did you stop it on the first experiment? Did it just rev away with a willingness to peel the bonnet back or was the revs linked to accelerator position.

i just took my foot off accelerator. it didnt rev uncontrollably, i was still controlling it with the accelerator. but when the revs dropped then it just died.

hope its not life threatening.

first and foremost , check youre oil level . if you have that much oil in the engine that its right up to and covering the crank you may find the engine will start and you wont be able to stop it because it will run on its own and the oil inside it , only way to stop ig this happens is to stick in top gear and hope you can stall it .

otherwise , if it isnt something like the throttle cable sticking, either frozen in this weather , or chaffed wire internally , it may bethat the injection pump needs reconditioning .

you need to get another person to watch the throttle cable connection and associated parts on the pump , whilst running engine , check to see that when you let foot off throttle , that the accelerator arm returns to its idle position on the pump .

i had probs on my 300TDI similar to yours, but mine was just the rubber mat on drivers floor that needed an area cutting out of it because the throttle pedal got stuck in the gap thats supposed to offer clearance for the pedal .

cheers. ian

thanks for the advice, u mentioned the pump, is it feasable that when the engines running at high revs and i switch off, the force the diesel is being sucked thru the pump wont allow the solenoid shut off valve to shut off unless i release the flow of diesel ie.. take my foot off.

From what you've described, that's deffo what's happening,

If a diesel engine ever gets a supply of oil, past hte rings, from a knackered turbo, breather etc, she'll rev uncontrollably, i.e you can let the throttle go, and the'll still run,

i had this happen when i had cleaned the K&N air filter, i was in a hurry, so i cleaned it, then sprayed the air filter oil all over it, and re-fitted the filter, started the engine up and she was knocking a bit, turned the key off, and the engine continued to run at fast idle,

I knew what was happening, so i was ready to put her in gear and stall her if the revs increased, but they didnt, i got about 5 minuites at fast idle from the excess oil on the filter tho, she finaly slowed down to normal idle, then got slower and slower as the oil being sucked off the filter was depleated, at about 500 rpm she spluttered to a stop,

I read a lot of self build motorhome web sites, and in america converting the old yellow school busses is quite popluar, and theres one bloke who does the old clown busses, and he's got a warning on his page about a certian engine that's fitted to these busses, that your never, ever, ever to run one out of diesel, if you do that the engine will suck oil past the rings, and she'll rev...and rev..and rev, untill the engine explodes quite spectaculary apprantly due to being over reved or sucking the crank case dry.
