For what it's worth, I sold my Disco Td5 auto and got a Ford Mondeo manual diesel estate. I hate to say it, but it's a much better towcar than the Disco in terms of performance and general niceness to drive with a trailer on the hook. It feels much stronger, and it does over 30mpg with a 1500Kg caravan. Took Daughter No 2 from Uni back to her Mum's for Christmas at the weekend (no caravan, obviously), and it did just over 52 mpg at roughly legal speeds. No regrets there, then.

If you don't actually need the off-road ability, there are better ways of towing.

There's a long road through a village near here that I used to go through every day. It's all a 30 limit, but if "feels" much faster IYSWIM and there is a great temptation to let the car run away to 40 or so. Setting the CC to 29 mph for a few minutes is a licence saver.

be aware that there's a fair amount you can do to improve the performance of a mechanical TDi, without even touching the boost pressure or fitting big intercoolers...

The one we had (manual) was as flat as a fart when we first had it. turning up the pump and advancing the pump timing a tad made it better and if anything more economical.

Im going to get shot for saying it, but look at a Shogie / Pajero..

2.8TD, auto will do about 27-28 and amazingly the 3500 V6 petrol will do about 25-26..

Get the 3500V6, special button by the autobox, press it, wave at most sports cars off the line (there still kill you but there faces are a picture)

For the lower price of petrol, the V6 is a better by.. TD will run on Bio mind, which was a consideration for me BUT the only place selling it around here is 87p per litre which is a bit of a pi$$ take.

Ive looked down the Disco route for the bird.. Unless I can find a mint, mint ES V8 on gas, the little Shogies will win everytime.

Good Nreg will be anything from 2k-3.5k.. Unfortuently Discos just dont compete at this age..

That's the reason my daily drive is a 3.0TD Hilux - 27 round town and

32+ on a trip.

Isuzu troopers are pretty impressive, too, as trucks. Not a landie, but...

then again, as Rich B said - if you don't need the tractor ability, get a normal car, if money is an issue, as none of the big 4x4s will come close on economy.

Almost had a 3.1D SWB actually.. Yup.. Mega truck.. Only let down by the last owner thinking that hammeriting the chassis was a good idea and it now looking very sorry for itself under the paint.
