Disco 300 tdi es auto running problems

A question for a mate really, but he has a 300 tdi es auto Discovery. When driving it under normal conditions it drives ok, if anything it is a little under powered. I think thats down to a Turbo problem?????? there seems to be a blowing sound when the Turbo spins up, a bit like its leaking if that doesn't sound too silly...

When approaching a hill it drives fine, going up hills is a little slow, but when reaching the top and levelling off it seems to die. All the power seems to dissapear and there's a plume of black smoke. Anybody had any similar experiences????

The blowing sound is probably a ruptured hose after the turbo, this will cause your lack of power but probably not your black smoke which sounds like it's getting too much fuel. You don't say if it's got EDS or not, if it has your ECU my be faulty. First job though is find and cure that leak, it may just ssolve all your problems.

It sounds like a turbo related hose problem.

It has been known for large air leaks to also develop black smoke when accelerating.

I would suggest you give a thorough checkup on the condition of the hoses from the turbocharger to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the engine. If those appear OK by visual inspection then remove them check them from the inside and if they still appear ok put them back on the car taking extra care so that they sit properly and the fasteners are tightened as much as possible.

If you still have air leaking from the system then either recheck the hoses or remove the intercooler and check for raptures/cracks/holes on it also.

hope this helps Pantelis

Peter Seddon was greatly moved, and spake thus, saying:

A ruptured hose would explain the over-fuelling/black smoke too. Less air, same fuelling, too much fuel for the available air, black smoke.

Fix the hose first before you worry about that!

Agreed.
