disco series I

I have a 1993 200tdi disco with sagging suspension, the previous owner used the vehicle for towing a heavy trailer on a regular bases and so had upgraded all the springs this gave a very hard ride but was great for towing. Now that I am replacing the shocks and springs with standard ones I am having difficulty identifying which of the new springs go where , I have one pair of what look like twin action heavies and one set of slightly lighter ones but which way round do they go?

I seem to remember that for tdi's the front springs are heavier than the rear to carry the extra weight of the diesel engine if this is correct which way up should they be the tight coils to the top or the bottom ?

Thanks in advance for any help !

Ps I am in a hurry as the disco is up on my ramp and jacks as I type

Every spring on a TDI Disco is a different rating, you have to get the corresponding spring on the right corner. The springs should be marked up with different colours on them, this site was mentioned on the group recently:

and listsall spring rates/coulors and where they fit on which vehicle. If you can'tsee the colour bands on youir springs after a rub down then counting thecoils may be enough for you to work out which is which, as far as I know itdoesn't matter which way up a spring goes but the rear ones latch under aretainer on the axle so the more open end is easier to fit at the axle end.Hope this helps, Fergus

Hope not, or mine are the wrong way round. That could explain why mine is nose light, although the guy who sold me them seemed to know what he was on about.

When I took my original set off, the heavier gauge ones were at the back, and the thinner ones at the front.

The slightly longer one of the pair always goes on the driver's side.

I found this when Bruce threatened to do the front springs on the Discovery.

think it was just an excuse to go and buy some more kit - springcompressors and he just happened to buy a socket set which were a bargainand a tool box. also in the sale. That was in March and the springs are inthe corner of the kitchen still.
