Discovery Dashboard Fault....

There we were, trundling up the M6 last Sunday afternoon, when the rev' counter packed in. "Hmmm" I thought, "I'd better fix that at the weekend."

A couple of miles later the rev' counter gave a kick, then died again. It repeated this two or three times. Each time it gave a kick the red battery not charging light came on.

A couple of miles later, after making a noise like "pop!", the rev' counter returned for good but so did the not charging light. Naturally I was a bit concerned about the warning light so at the next services we pulled-off and I checked the battery was ok. It was. The lights were still blazing brightly and the engine started easily so we pressed on, arriving in Glasgow not too far behind schedule.

Next morning we scraped the frost from the windscreen and I prepared to start her up, fully expecting a flat battery, but she fired-up immediately. The not charging light was still lit though and remained lit for the rest of the journey home to Tobermory.

So, what's likely to have gone bang behind the dashboard? I'm presuming some electrical component has failed. Anyone seen this before?

The vehicle, incidentally, is a 1991 Landrover Discovery V8i with a gas conversion.

I think rev counter is fed by the alternator, which of course is the bit that charges the battery. So there is quite possibly nothing wrong in the dashboard at all, rather a fault in the alternator or the circuit gubbins at that end?

very much more likely. the 2 faults in tandem point to a dodgy alternator, or possibly dodgy wiring to same.

Diodes gone in the Alternator. Sometimes accompanied by the rev counter not moving until about 3000 rpm.

Thanks again, everyone. Assuming it is just the diode pack, can I just replace this or is it better/cheaper to replace the whole alternator?

The battery is still holding a good charge.

Any competent vehicle electrician should be able to replace the diode pack. I had one changed a couple of years ago and the guy didn't even take the alternator off the vehicle :-)

Hope that's the problem.

Thanks. I'm a fair mechanic and electrician so presuming I can get the parts I'll give that a go first, after checking the circuit board behind the dash hasn't melted.
