There was a thread a little while ago that said certain remote alarm receivers caused flat batteries if they were continually brought out of standby mode by other transmissions on the same frequency as the key fob. A google groups search should find the thread.

alarm only flashing once is telling you that the batteries in the keyfob are low, but I don't think on that age vehicle this is the cause of your other problem. Keyfob takes 2 CR2016 IIRC, prise it apart and replace 'em, the alarm should flash 3 times again. On a related note, when it flashes once like that it also doesn't set the alarm fully, only the basic doors setting, IIRC2

as for the other thing...

switch everything off you can imagine, pull the + battery terminal off and measure the current. On modern vehicles, there's always a small amount of current (radio memory etc.) but this should be in milliamps. With everything off, the battery shouldn't flatten inside of about 3 months minimum.

If there's more than about 100 mA, then you have to start disconnecting stuff to find out where it's going.

good luck... unexplained electrical drains can be a bastard to find.

It shouldn't be a problem with a new battery, but an older battery can have enough damp gunge on the battery top to make a high-resistance path between the terminals. Thorough cleaning can make a difference. I was once told a bit of baking powder in the water used to wash the top can help, but the tap water around here is pretty hard anyway.
