Discovery II Sunroof/s leaking.

Hi all.

Is this a known problem with this model? I have not had it long but I've found water pouring down from the roof-lining and down the rear-view mirror onto the dashboard and the radio, - and also pouring down the inside of the tailgate door. It seems as if the roof lining itself is filling with water every time it rains.

On investigation, I opened both sunroofs - and the seals were so loose that they just fell out of their seatings. I can't get either of them to stay in the channels anymore - although the rubber seals themselves seem to be in fairly new condition. This is only a 6-year old car and it is in very good condition, so no rust or abuse to worry about.

Is it possible that the sunroof rubbers should have a more rigid insert in them to make them clip into their seatings, - but they were replaced without the inserts at some point in the past?

TIA.

Howard.

Hi I thought they had cured the sunroof problems of the Disco I on the Disco II, but my 04 model had to have a new front roof fitted when just 2 years old, all on warranty. Even got blinds on the new one which were not on the original. Mine used to collect water in the cubby hole above the sunvisors and them dump it in my lap when cornering!! You may need a new sunroof unit.

Howie,

I have a 6 year old Disco 2 and used to have the same problem as you. You need to check that the drains in the sun roof are not blocked. The easiest way to do this is to pour some water into the sunroof and see if it comes out of the drains in the wheel arches. When I took the roof lining out of my car both of the vents on the front sunroof were broken and I had to fix them using magic putty.

I still get a small leak when there's a very heavy down pour and I also get a lot of gurgling, so I suspect that it's time for me to get new seals.

regards

Terry

Hi Terry. Sorry, I thought I'd replied earlier!

I will have a go at it this weekend. The seals certainly are useless. I honestly cannot see how on earth they EVER managed to fit properly into their seating. Every time I open either of the sunroofs, the seals just lift up with them! Now, - I wonder where I could order some new seals from, - without paying through the nose?

Hum, mine is fine and we get some serious wind and rain up here. Mine are electric donno if the design is different for a manual, if yours are manaul.

The obvious thing to do is to stop the seals sticking. Give them and the seating area a good clean and then wipe a *trace* of silicone polish onto the seals and seat.

Hi Dave.

No. Mine are electric too. Wierd.

Anyway, they really are as loose as I said. I think that they are either the wrong ones or they are not fitted properly. I suppose my only real guarantee is to take them to a LR dealership and get them to have a look. (I really hate that idea though)!

Appreciate your help.

Howard.

Disco II late 2000 build. Electric sunroofs. Initially no leaks. After a few years, the front footwells used to get wet when it rained and got the occasional drips from the rear sunroof onto the rear load cover.

I appear to have fixed both. Under the vehicle on the left side of the transmission tunnel is a rubber nipple thingy. Having given it a good tweak, a lot of water came out. The front footwells now stay dry!

If you remove the left hand rear light cluster, you should see the end of the sunroof drain pipe. I blew up it and some crud came out. No more rear sunroof leaks.

Hope this is helpful to someone.

Two symptoms - two causes.

Those are the drain tubes from the aircon, nothing to do with the sunroof. If they are blocked the condensate from the a/c overflows into the footwell area. Easy fix, and needs to be done regularly IME.

In that area is the air filter unit for (I think) the ACE system. Don't get any water in there!

ACE is hydraulic, think about the forces and speed required to stop 2 tonnes of car rolling when thrown into a corner at 70mph...

The air inlet/filter for the SLS is up there somewhere though.

Note the "I think". You're right, of course.
