Discovery Owners Club

Perhaps it would make more sense to list all the websites for all the Land Rover Clubs - that way people could pick and chose :-)

I think LRM or someone do this?

It must be said that if you frequent a lot of forums - you will find the same people giving the same advice, be it paid or for free - and as is the way of the world, sometimes also getting it totally ignored ;)

I think, however, we've moved on with the discussion - and it's more generic than just a single clubs forum. So .. please any DOC members I think you'll find this discussion is not levelled solely at the DOC forum, but more the practice of charging to read your own posts :-)

Im sure that is a contradiction - the 'members' ARE the DOC. Any member can stand for a committee post and vote to control the direction the club is going. the members who dont are obviously happy with the clubs actions. I've been there!

I get the feeling you dont like the DOC's actions because you have some sort of beef with the management? Am i close here? Do all clubs attract people who dont like the club for similar reasons?

Please dont read me wrong here - i'm not trying to fight or argue with you i'm just 'discussing' it because im interested in your reasons! (and also entitled to my view!) :)

I think there might be a little search engine on the internet that lets you find other forums and websites too :)

indeed! :)

aye, i'm not picking on the DOC either!

Are you not a fan of charging either then Neil? (How does mud-club pay the hosting bills?)

Tom,

mud-club remains "free" due to the income we make from the profit on selling stickers and other merchandise. We said from the start we'd not make it a chargeable club - and of course having no committee means it's stayed that way

No offence intended or taken. All I meant in my post is that I am happy with this NG alt fan lr and object to advertising. Mind you this thread must be quite a coup for DOC :-))

Oh please! "Everyone must be happy because none of them stand against me"? Thats how we got into Iraq!!!

FFS no I dont have a beef with any individual there. Why is it that nobody can have an opinion unless its personal?

I dont understand the question, sorry

Yes, I noticed the commotion this caused at the DOC too :o). Bit defensive, wot! I dont think there's much further to go with this - I'm not going to change their minds and they sure wont change mine. The whole *concept* of the internet is to make information available, and the whole *concept* of an owners club should be to encourage new blood. Advertising more than covers the cost, so there is *no* reason why the board should be chargeable

That's a spurious example. Suppose someone wants to get a funky badge from a club but doesn't want the newsletter, trips, forum etc, that person will have to join the club soley to get the funky badge, so that makes the whole club a rip-off! What a terrible world eh.

Any club's main attraction is the userbase, they contribute to the magazine, the meetings, the club nights and everything else, it's a club, that's what it's for. There is a dividing line between a club and a business that provides services that are complete in themselves but most clubs services depend on the users to make them worthwhile. The forum's no real different to organised days out in that respect.

valid point, but assuming that the DOC is similar to the 101 club it only takes a very small number of people to make a difference rather than the very large number of people it takes to affect national politics!

Does not having to pay for the forum encourage more people to join the club? (I'm assuming here that all club members have forum access by default), thus encouraging the new blood to the club?

On or around Thu, 25 Jan 2007 08:25:37 +0000, Ian Rawlings enlightened us thusly:

I think the essence is profit, myself. I've no objection to people running a club and charging to cover the resultant expenses. I'm not so impressed if the club shows a profit (obviously, if you have 2000 members and make a profit of 20 quid, that's not an issue. But if you show a profit of 20K per annum which is not being put back into the club, then the members are paying

10 quid too much each.
