OK, not actually a LR per se...

4-cylinder NA, Bosch pump similar to the 200/300 TDi ones.

the other day, it dropped onto 3 cylinders. Pulled into a layby, found nothing obvious wrong, and continued, and shortly the 4th pot re-asserted itself.

yesterday, it did the same, and then after a while, went onto 2 and then eventually onto 1, which resulted in inadequate forward motion.

got a lift back home (twas onyl about 3 miles) and came back with tools. Diesel present in pump, both sides of the low-pressure system. Cracked off injector pipe at #1, turned it over, tightened it up, hey presto, we now have 2 cylinders playing and it'll run again, and in short order bled the remaining injectors and restored it to full working order.

Now since the tank was over 3/4 full and the fuel filter appears to be nearly new, anyone offer suggestions as to how this state of affairs came to pass? I did wonder if it was sucking air from somewhere.

the initial misfire is regular, not erratic - it misses evenly on one pot, and later appeared to miss evenly (FSVO even) on 2 pots.

Sounds like you are getting air in somewhere, possibly aggravated by a partly blocked filter. JD

Austin Shackles came up with the following;:

A loose joint or crack in the pipework somewhere? Certainly sounds like an air leak.

Had a mate with similar problem (Not on a Landrover so this might not be the case) and it turned out to be the swaged bit under the compression nut of one of the injector pipes which had cracked at the shoulder of the swage.

Filters may need changing. If this does not work then air leaks are a possibility. An outside chance of it being due to a faulty lift pump [if fitted].

main filter in the engine bay looks new; and should be if as was said it's had a full service.

Today it ran fine, but leaked diesel from the filter, but I had a look at that and refitted it correctly and it looks dry now.

It was dark when I refitted it before and it's a fiddly thing to fit, compared to some.

will see if the problem recurs.

I had a problem with a badly-seated seal on the filter allowing air in, couldn't see any fuel leaking out though. might be worth taking it off and checking the seals for dents indicating mis-seated.

Regards. Mark.

well, I think it should be OK now. The odd thing is that I've had it for over a week and done 500+ miles without missing a beat, 's only the other day that it gave any problems. Mind, I bunged some redex stuff into the tank, so I suppose that could've dislodged some crud somewhere.

some time later...

it only goes wrong if driven consistently above about 55 mph. So, suspected lift pump. Having looked at where the bugger's mounted, I then decided to jury-rig an electric one in the pipework to see if it solved the problem. Some fiddling later, and off I go down the road; sure enough it goes fine. Hang on, what's that stuff on the rear windows? SHIT!!! pull in hastily to find jury-rigged pipe has come apart and merrily spilling expensive stuff on the road. Looked at it again, hangon, the diesel's comeing out of *that* pipe, which is th eopposiste way to the way the electric pump is pumping... oops.

switched 'em over so it pumped in the right direction, and it then didn't blow apart. However, the fact that it was running OK with the return from the injector pump dumping fuel down the road led me to think the lift pump is OK.

Next, pulled the filter housing for a proper look at it. Pipes labelled 1,

2, 3, 4. Some study reveals that some kind soul previously has put the feed from the lift pump where the return to the tank should be and vice versa.

Swapped 'em over, and so far it's running OK....
