Does a 1986 2.5 NA Sherpa diesel engine fit a 84 petrol Landy??

I bought one on Ebay 2day but was only told it was a sherpa engine after I won it, can anyone confirm it fits before I pay for it???

Cheers.

Yes, it definitely fits but don't go in deep s*1t with it unless you change the timing case and all the other bits as it only has a tin cover which is open at the bottom. If you are not using it off road then it's not a problem but can you keep a Landrover owner away from play?

Apart from the timing case, cover, belt and gears it's virtually the same engine but you'd be better off with a 200Tdi.

decent TDis tend to cost more, though. I agree that it's a better engine, mind. Considering how well they last and how well the vans rot, I'm surprised there aren't more people using the Di transit for this sort of thing.

Do they drop practically straight in though, or are there spigot, clutch and bellhousing issues (amongst others) to overcome with a possibly hard-to-get and expensive conversion kit?

got a sherpa lump in mine.

will require:

removing battery tray and relocating the battery (under the passenger seat is good)

possibly changing downpipe compared to petrol (has a horizontal output)

Been told it slots in, petrol manifold fits diesel ok, may have to adjust 1 engine bracket not the chassis mount. Nobody can tell me if my petrol exhaust will be ok??

You'll probably find the back part of the exhaust is the same, if it's for a

2.5 petrol.

the back part of mine is standard series but i had to get a different front section to fit the 2.5. It didnt cost very much and is standard for some series engines anyway (just not the petrol i had before). If you are buying a new front section get the one that brings the pipe back next to the gearbox rather than going under the passenger seat. (the inner one is more solid and tidy and doesnt hit extra x-members and fuel tanks if you have them)

my engine might have an adaptor between one mount and the engine. I got it fresh from another landy and we were never sure if it was an original metal bracket or one someone had added. Its just like a wedge shape to get 2 different angles to mate up

That's interesting, I will have the petrol engine mounts and the Sherpa mounts so hopefully that will work, if not I'll have to make one! Cheers.

I didnt have to mod the chassis mounts atall. The little extra adaptor is on the injector pump side. Its like the size of a small wedge of cheese!. You can barely get a spanner in there to do up the bolt that holds it onto the engine mount rubber because it is so close to the other bolt.

Thank's for taking the trouble to take pics Tom! Oily gave me a part number for the "wedge" so it should be ok on that score. You didn't manage to keep the landrover air intake than? I'm hoping to fit the Landy Petrol exhaust manifold otherwise I will have to do the same as you have. I should find out tommorow if I can still have the engine, fingers crossed! Cheers.
