Does anybody know of....

Anybody offering welding evening/weekend classes in Bucks/Oxon/Herts?

I'm looking to learn, but I'd like to find out that I suck at it on somebody elses equipment before splurging on a welder for myself.

As is I'm going to be killed for the axle stands, 3T jack, crawl board and Draper Toolchest I'm planning on buying in the new year.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Try your local technical college. Barnfield College in Luton certainly run courses in welding, also a course in Classic Vehicle restoration.

Bruce attended one of these at one of the Leicester Colleges a while ago now. On the course he went on there were no more than 15 attending - 9 of them were land rover owners.

I'm in the lucky position that I have the approptiate equipment, and can do brazing, oxy-acetelyene welding, and mig welding, although my mig welding leaves a lot to be desired.

If you know your going to use it just buy one and teach yourself you get taught on a big expensive machine then come home to a cheaper one and don't get the same results straight away so you have to learn again anyway

I've always found Mig welding the easiest over gas and stick once the machine is set up correctly when your welding it should sound like bacon sizzling in a pan if not adjust the wire feed till it does then it's just a case of practising

industrial kit. I bought a mig welder and got on practicing with offcuts. If there is one secret to successful welding/soldering/glueing it is that the materials must be clean and touching. I'd invest in the welder and dispence with the tool chest. Best of Luck

Absolutely, get a cheap small angle grinder and use it with a flexi disc to clean surfaces without grinding them away, worth it just to have it to hand instead of swapping grinding discs about.

With the regs on changing disks, with some of the cheap ones you might as well not bother replacing a worn disk...

Please do. Bruce uses angle grinder frequently.

I think David was referring to the "ABRASIVE WHEELS SAFETY REGULATIONS". This was the1970 act which regulated the mounting of abrasive wheels, the later "Provision and use of working equipment regulations" update it to encompass the actual use of powered grinders. I don't think it covers personal use, yet. Basically you need to have been assessed in your competency to handle the tool.
