Front Cover Range Rover Classic (87)

Anyone ever replaced the timing chain cover, gasket, timing chain & gears on the 3.5 or 3.9L?

What tricks/advice can you give for this job?

Hi

No great problem to do really just amke sure you have the right cam for your engine and even better buy a kit with followers chain and drive gears etc. The biggest problem I found was the bolts holding the water pump and timing cover have a habbit of shearing and need drilling out of the block so one sollution is if they do tap and fit studs and nuts or helicoils. Remember to prime the tappets by soaking them in oil before fitting. Has the heads been touched of so check the preload - look at the RPI website for good info. While your there if the cams worn away due to fair use suggest you check and change the oil pump gears(dont forget to pack the pump with vasaline to aid priming) also the rocker shafts are well worth a good clean and look at for wear. Fit the newer type valley gasket in place of the tin one as it seals better. After that just use a torque wrench to assemble and make sure all blind holes are clean and lube only with light oil at most. Timing marks are clear on the gears but set everything at TDC after you have managed to crack the crank pulley retaining nut (it can be a pig).
