Fuel Filter change - 200TDi

Dear All

I have a defender 90 with a 200TDi. I plan to change the filters on it this weekend. Can any one tell me - is it possible to change the fuel filter without having to bleed the engine? If not how simple is it to bleed the engine (it needs to be very simple if I'm to do it ;-)?

Thanks

PS any advice on what oil to use?

Thanks

It is not extremely necessary to bleed the system.... if your lift pump is working properly then the injection pump will take the air through and be ok after a short while of rough running. This is not recommended though.

There is a small 10mm bolt on the top of the filter housing. After putting your new filter on, crack this bolt off a turn or two and start the engine. After a while you'll get fuel and bubbles coming out from around this bolt. You can then tighten it back up after the bubbles are slowing or gone. Don't get heavy with it and strip the thread - it's only an alloy housing remember.

As for oil - Castrol Edge 15W40 is good all round oil that we use in the workshop.

cheeers, Craig.

Many thanks for the reply. That's all I needed. I can get on and change the filters and oil now :-)

Thanks for all your help.

If you fill the new filter with diesel before you screw it into place, u save a lot of time.

Not a recommended practice. You can get away with it with oil filters but you should not risk it with fuel systems. The risk of introducing dirt however careful you are is high. The dirt doesn't need to be visible to be a potential problem.

The 200Tdi isn't as susceptible as more modern engines but this is a short cut that you shouldn't take.

Funnily enough I did a service on my 200Tdi last night, including a fuel filter change. Now as ever, my set up is different as I have a veggie conversion and a twin tank system. Last night I bled it (the diesel) through with no problems (it stopped, but after turning it over for a while it started and picked up fine). This morning (going to Dunster for a dog show) no problems and a hassle free switch to diesel. Yet later today on re-starting at Dunster (after getting Best in Breed :-) no power from the engine, obviously a constriction in the supply somewhere. Fortunately I could switch to veggie (a bit earlier than usual) but got home, on switching back to diesel, still no better, it runs, no power and it won't accelerate. When you push the accelerator down it picks up briefly then drops back (brief extra fuelling from the injector pump?)

It can't be the injector or the lift pump (as they are common to both veggie and diesel and veggie is fine) so it is somewhere between the tank and the 6 port valve. Has anyone had a filter suddenly play up like this, or the system following a filter change? Could I be getting air in in the filter.....?

Cheers

Hi..

Sure it's not the other way round? It's more usual to have fuel filter troubles with Veggie, than with normal Mineral Derv. Otherwise, there must be a partial blockage somewhere (the bottom of the tank bashed in?) or a valve not changing over correctly.

Have to say, they smell better on Veggie too, especialy if the fuel was pre used in a Chinese...!

As to the bleading process, the book tels you to crack that little 10mm bolt, and use the manual lever on the lift pump, to get the worst of the air out of the filter, before restarting the lump. Sometimes though you need to turn the crank over 1 turn by hand, so the lift pump can have it's full stroke available on the manual priming lever.

109/110 hybrid bitsa. 200TDi, coils, locker, etc etc etc... I'd run it on Veggie, if I had the space to make/store it!

Hello Dave,

As it turned out it was a blockage between the filter and the tank (a blow through with the air line sorted that out!). I had heard of problems with filters on the veggie side (and mine is filtering the hot oil) but I've now done about 20k miles with no problems. I don't make by own oil, I buy SVO from Makros. My last lot was 75p/litre. It runs fine. I just purge after each run and thus start and finish on diesel which reduces the issues with the engine. I'd forgotten about the priming lever. I just get lazy these days! After the 19J that needed bleeding, the 200TDi is so nice that you can just crank it over and it self primes!

Hi all

Again many thanks for all the comments - especially those about bleeding/manually bleeding.

Peter

I'm just about to get mine converted to run on SVO. Who did your's for you?
