Gearbox woes imminent?

I have a 1990 90 with the original 2.5TD engine. Not sure what the gearbox or txfer box are but they are original so whatever was standard for the year. The vehicle has done just over 160k miles.

It's making vibration and rumbling noises which are very similar to the symptoms of knackered UJs on the prop shafts, and there is a very definite 'clunk' when you let the clutch up with anything less than a totally smooth touch on the pedal. I replaced all the UJ's last year so I don't think this is the problem. They seem firm when rattled and I suspect something a bit further back up the drive chain.

So, can people tell me what's likely to be worn out, and how much it's likely to cost to fix? I can do my own labour although I might choose to pay someone else due to lack of time depending on how long the job is likely to take, so an estimate of this as well would be useful.

TIA

Nick.

If it's anything like my 1990 110 (150k miles) the splines went on the input shaft. That was last Christmas.

To save messing about I fitted a second-hand Discovery box (gearbox and transfer box) which gave me better ratios than the Defender box.

My clunk went!

Are you sure? I've never seen the splines go on the gearbox input shaft; output or mainshaft, yes. I think you must have just replaced the transfer box as if you fitted both together you would have trouble with prop lengths, mountings and centre seat etc. To put the short input shaft in the main box and fit the short bellhousing IIRC you also have to replace the layshaft etc as the number of teeth are different which turns it into a bigger job but it's the best option.

Showing my ignorance again!

But -

The symptoms were that at a set of traffic lights there was a loud clunk and I was going nowhere. I was recovered back to a local land rover specialist and I left it with him. As far as I am aware it was the main input shaft splines that had worn and that my Defender now has a Discovery gearbox and transfer box fitted.

How did you get the gear levers in the right place?

I tried RR into Disco, and the gear lever was in the wrong place, and moreover, it's not a trivial job to swap them over.

However, the normal failure is the gearbox output/transfer input splines, both the shaft and the transfer box gear.

OK, try again, still showing my ignorance!

I have checked (shouldn't have typed from the hip!)

Mainshaft splines that went.

Defender gearbox Discovery transfer box.

ah, well, that makes sense. Not a hard swap to make, that.

Generally, not much else fails on the LT77/LT230 combo other than that set of splines.
