Head gasket

I have a recollection that there is a composite gasket for the 300tdi which is an improvement on the old tin ones anybody recommend a manufacturer/brand?. I got the new Disco home safely taking it steady with the filler cap loosened to prevent a pressure build up and no surprise that the possible air lock is certainly a blown head gasket I did come up with a novel way of bleeding the air out tho' top up the header tank and cap it then remove the filler plug from the thermostat housing insert a funnel that is a tight fit an pour in water until the funnel is half full and run the engine until the bubbles cease or in the case of a blown gasket not! . Got my fingers crossed the head is otherwise OK but I have got an engineering option if it needs skimming. Sometimes you smile and wonder if the world has gone mad the number 4 injector spillway banjo is one with 2 pipes one to the return pipe and one to spray derv on the bulkhead anti rust measure ? :-)

I think you will find the head gasket for a 300tdi is always composite ...

There are 4 different thickness depending on how far your pistons poke out of the block ...

Grab a "Rave" and print out the 300Tdi engine repair manual, it is all there

Thanks Max I already do have most editions of RAVE including american (NAS) and I even had a french version ( qu'elle horreur ) I regularly post a series of links for new users of AFL which reminds me it's getting about that time. The 200 and 300 tdi gasket are the same thing but I have that niggley naggley thought at the back of my mind that there is a better than average gasket available ( could be mistaking it maybe for another landy engine ) I would of course fit the same thickness as is however if I have to skim a touch off the head thats another matter and I'll probably use the percieved wisdom and go with a 1.6mm Elring . Landrover have modified the Genuine parts gasket FROM composite TO a multi-layer tin gasket.

Thanks Marc thank god my mind is not playing tricks now the $5000 question is is the multi layer a better option. I did know the HS 2.8 ( International ) has a laminated steel gasket now did International do a mod for the 2.5 before they introduced the 2.8? I'm beginning to think buggerit I'll just go with my instincts Derek

On past experience with non-LR engines where there is an option between composite and laminated steel gaskets I will opt for the laminated one every time.
