Help! 96 Range Rover Overheating Problem

Does anyone have any suggestion? My 96 4.0 SE Range Rover with 76,000 km (55,000 miles) overheats in hot weather. I live in Vancouver, BC Canada. Our summer is a little hot these days. The fan clutch was replaced a year and a half ago, the radiator, hoses and thermostats have also been replaced. The needle is not touching red but it makes me nervous. It does get hot enough to make the A/C turnoff at times. Again anyone out there HELP! Thanks Simon

Pull the heads and check for block to liner separation, looks like a crack between the edge of the liner and the ally block. Very common on these engines, unfortunately. OTOH, it could be something silly, like the sender telling lies? Good luck. Badger B.H.Engineering Rover V8 specialists.

Are you using water? Or does the gauge just read hot? Is the coolant expansion tank pressurised? Is there any water under the oil filler cap? Is there any whitish foam inside the breather hose from the rocker cover to the throttle body?

Are you losing coolant? Is the cooling system still pressurised when cold? Look out- you might have the 'loose sleeve' problem- your motor is at the right age. Easy fix though- just drop in a new motor!!

Sorry to scare you- but have it checked out. Or sell while the problem is still hard to diagnose. If it is a loose sleeve, it's going to get worse.

Otherwise have the block chemically cleaned (the cooling galleries, not the outside!)- it fixed an overheating problem on an '83 i used to have (after much pointless mucking around with viscous fan couplings; wasn't the radiator either).

Ooo errrr. Blows out of the overflow as it warms up then doesn't loose any more? Do this a couple of times and it's lost enough to overheat? Rangie 1996 4.6 HSE?

Do I need to be worried? How much is a recon V8 anyway?

In a word, yes.

Depends what spec of recon, anything from UK£750ish (all wear items replaced) through UK£2200 (rebuilt with new block) to UK£5500 (race, supercharged?) for a late engine. The parts are more expensive than the early 3.5/3.9 types.

Oh well. Painful but not death.

Thanks.

Local agent confirms sliped liner and offered me the Genuine LR part for 4700. Does anybody know somewhere near Brighton, Sussex where I can go for something more 2200 shaped? (If you're a business remove the trash from the return address and make me an offer.)

I'm not into doing these things myself anymore, getting too old, but this is my Scuba bus so I'd rather get it fixed. 1996 Rangie HSE 4.6

Maybe I can fix the radio while I'm at it. nigelH
